Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is coming later this year, and it will be a world of hurt. A lot of that emotional damage will be reaped by the blue-haired chaos gremlin of Jujutsu Kaisen that is Mahito. Hilarious in some absurdly twisted ways, audiences already saw how bad a guy he truly is when he killed Junpei in the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen.
With a massive amount of cursed energy, a hatred for every human soul, and an insane domain expansion to go with his great physical strength, Mahito is a world of pain, both emotional and physical, waiting to hit Jujutsu Kaisen fans and characters alike. But in order to get the full understanding of the danger he poses next, you have to understand his powers, who he is, and what role he’s going to play—without spoilers, of course.
Who is Mahito in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Covered in stitches, don’t let his chaos obsession fool you. Mahito is one of the main antagonists of the Jujutsu Kaisen series along with “Suguru Geto.” An unregistered special grade cursed spirit. He is also the leader of his group, consisting of Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon.
All of which we got to see in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1. While Geto seems to have a soft spot for sorcerers, Mahito and his group have a different ultimate goal: eradicating humanity. Don’t worry, though. They won’t be lonely because they plan to replace the population with cursed spirits ultimately. He entered the series in Chapter 16 of the manga and in Episode 7 of the anime.
Absolutely sadistic and entirely unhinged, Mahito sees himself as the embodiment of human hatred toward each other. And while that hatred allows him to dispose of any human without thought, it also means that he is extremely good at manipulating humans and helping the darkness in their hearts fester, like with Junpei.
Mahito manipulated and then killed Junpei as a ploy to help awaken Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1. While it seems pretty straightforward, the truth is that watching Junpei unravel and be taken advantage of is deeply unsettling and sad, even more so after meeting Yuta Okotsu in Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie.
A key leader in the curses that will come for our Jujutsu Sorcerers, Mahito is a foe unrestrained even by Geto in many moments. When you look at his power set, that’s not a good thing. Add in the extremely high intellect that allows him to out-power and outsmart his opponents, and he is a literal recipe for disaster.
How Strong is His Cursed Powers?
Like most of the curses and people in Jujutsu Kaisen, Mahito has enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, and durability, although the last of these hits new heights when you see the rest of his cursed powers. With a patchwork face, Mahito can change his body into anything. This allows his body to absorb anything that comes his way and makes any and all physical attacks extremely “meh” in the damage dealt. This high sustainability, coupled with his ability to alter the state of matter around him, makes his skill level as a Special Grade curse all the more clear.
When stacking Mahito against the rest of the Jujutsu Kaisen characters, the easiest comparison is that even with Yuji equipped with three of Sukuna’s fingers he won. That is just for starters, too, as readers have gotten the chance to see Mahito go beyond any strength limits he was previously thought to have. With idle transfiguration and a polymorphic soul isomer, there just isn’t much anyone can do against him especially when you factor in his lack of sympathy for human lives and mankind as a whole.
Black Flash is powerful, but Mahito’s truly terrifying cursed techniques are Soul Multiplicity and Idle Transformation. The former allows him to blend souls into one form, which is definitely as ugly as it sounds, and the latter allows him to reshape the bodies of souls, heal his wounds, and transform his limbs into weapons. But the most interesting thing is that once we get to Shibuya, he can create clones.
While the curtain allows him a more defensive element by creating a barrier, self-Embodiment of Perfection will enable him to expand his domain and connect to every soul inside, letting him transfigure at will.
What can you expect from Mahito in Season 2?
One word: Shibuya. While I’m sure JJK fans are all anxiously awaiting the depressing arc to come, hopefully, in the second cour of Season 2, I won’t spoil it for you. But I will say that Mahito’s kill list is long, and his power level is far beyond what we got to explore last season.
We already know that the first part of Jujtusu Kaisen Season 2 will deal with flashback chapters that look at Gojo and Geto’s time at Jujutsu Tech as students (with some panels directly used in Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie) and introduce Toji Fshijuro.
So this section isn’t about what you can expect from Mahito. The answer is emotional damage. But it’s more about what to expect from the Shibuya Incident Arc, a soul-crushing in almost every way. There are deaths and destruction at such a grand scale that I cried at 3 am reading it for the first time. Yuji Itadori, Satoru Gojo, Kento Nanami, and Nobara Kugisaki are deeply in harms way.
Mahito is easily one of the best manga and anime villains in the game right now, and it has to do with Shibuya, which has been built up perfectly by how MAPPA chose to adapt the story for Season 1.
New episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 — Shibuuya Arc air every Thursday on Crunchyroll.
