Their Magic is Limitless drop will feature Lathril, Blade of the Elves, Path of Ancestry, Cultivate, Sol Ring, Finale of Devastation, Coat of Arms, and the one and only Dark Ritual. The cards themselves showcase artists’ takes on women of all ages, and the flavor text on each one calls to each of the art’s inspirations. Whether that be mentorship, motherhood, or fight. It’s rare to see women appreciated in their multitudes, but through mentorship, Secret Lair has aimed to highlight all of the ways that we leave the world better than we entered it.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Global Fund for Women is one of the world’s leading foundations for gender justice. Serving multiple organizations across the globe, this collaboration captures the beauty, resilience, ferocity, and love that women have shown at every stage of their lives.
Magic: The Gathering has helped me find my people. It’s given me an outlet for creativity as I build decks like my Valkries of Rohan Commander Deck that puts Eowyn, Fearless Knight at the center, surrounded by the Rohirrim in a glorious battle, with Valkyries waiting in tow to send them off. The trading card game has also connected me with women whose talent and vision have shaped the game’s story, design, and mechanics.
To highlight the Secret Lair x Global Fund for Women: Their Magic is Limitless drop, we spoke with the women behind the set about its impact, purpose, and more. For our exclusive interview, we spoke with Creative Lead Kat Morgan, Art Directors Anh Nguyen and Stephanie Cheung, and Narrative Concept Designers Lauren Bond and Sloane Chung Leong. The women speak about their ancestry, the impact of mentorship in their lives, and why the cards chosen for these Secret Lair reprints exemplify their goal.

BUT WHY THO: Secret Lair Philanthropy drops have been inspiring to see. This isn’t the first time that Secret Lair has supported a women-focused cause. How did the concept develop on its own for the “Their Magic is Limitless” drop? Were you thinking about the past drops as this was developed?
LAUREN BOND: Jackie Jones (VP of Magic Creative) pitched the drop as an opportunity for mentorship, pairing creatives from across teams to learn from and support each other. We wanted to reflect this unique process within the creative of the drop, showcasing women supporting each other in many varied ways throughout art and creative text.
KAT MORGAN: This was a first for us! The “Pride Across The Multiverse” drop, for example, gave us a beautiful reference for building something inclusive, but this new mentor-mentee structure allowed us to live it out as collaborators.
The concept of the drop drew direct inspiration from the mission of the Global Fund for Women. Our creative direction stemmed from the truth that women, and the women of Magic, aren’t a monolith, and begged the question: how do we capture that on cards that people will want to play?
BUT WHY THO: We often tend to see women as just mentors, just romantics, or just intimidating. It’s still rare to find a cohesive artistic focus that represents the many ways that women can be.
One of the most salient and consistent elements of the cards is their focus on relationships. Some cards feel romantic, others evoke an immediate sense of mentorship, and others still have a nice intimidation factor. Why was it important for the cards to represent different ideas of connections?
SLOANE CHUNG LEONG: Empowering femininity in an antifeminine world by showing various women in tangible, practical, and communal moments of feminine expression was crucial to this drop and to us on the team. It’s a sentiment that runs deep at Wizards but that we were very much excited to explore in a concentrated way here.
In our drop, we see moments of rage, romantic love, familial tenderness, creativity, motherhood (biological and chosen), mentorship, land stewardship, and leadership. The work of feminism is to challenge sexist stereotypes that drown out the multifaceted ways women choose to express themselves, the roles they take up in society, and how they move and look in the world. I think we were able to showcase a small but vibrantly varied slice of feminine expression here.
BUT WHY THO: Too often, it feels like women are invisible when they hit 40 in media. As I approach that age myself, I’ve found it comforting to see art that values women beyond youth.
In addition to connections, another element that stood out to me was the showcasing of women across a wide age range. This means we often think about the mentee rather than the mentor. What went into the decision to showcase art featuring more mature women?
KAT MORGAN: This was a priority for us as we considered holistic diversity for the drop. Imagine if women were allowed to age in media – we think it’d look something like this. Aging for women is also often tied to motherhood, which is not something that’s always available, chosen, or desired.
It’s deeply personal, and so are the stories of these characters. This choice also speaks to the lived experience of having an older woman invest in you, in whatever capacity this was true for you. Personally, this part of the drop was really meaningful to me since my grandmother was a hugely important part of my childhood and one of the most formative people of my life.
ANH NGUYEN: While working on the art direction of the cards, I worked with Stephanie to make sure that we show the women’s leadership and years of experience they have built. It is important to me personally that we highlight the strong sense of care and nurturing that women have for the younger generation. The support that mature women provide is what builds the foundation of strength, courage, and confidence of women in later generations.
BUT WHY THO: I noticed that the primary colors of this superdrop are green and black. Can you talk about why the cards chosen and the color pair lend themselves to the theme of this Secret Lair? What was it about the cards themselves that the team saw as exciting about adapting to this theme?
LAUREN BOND: The cards were chosen in part for their thematic resonance as well as their ability to be played together. Lathril represents the many roles of motherhood, community leadership, and warrior, and enables you to create a commander deck incorporating the drop as a whole.
Cards like Finale of Devastation showcase rage and grief, while being a powerful top end. Or Cultivate as a tender moment of connection to the natural world, and a staple of the commander format. Finding the connections and balance between gameplay and thematic resonance is one of the core parts of the narrative roles.
BUT WHY THO: The flavor text on the cards is some of my favorite that I’ve read. The theme pulls the player through growth, nurtured by those around you, the importance of striking back, raising your shields for those around you, fury, and choosing the path you take.
What are some of your favorite bits of flavor text in this drop, and what does it mean to you?
SLOANE CHUNG LEONG: While the Dark Ritual incantation was the most fun to write, I have a soft spot for the Cultivate flavor text. “For the roots to nourish the sprouts, we must tend to the world in which they grow.”
I descend from multiple native ancestries where the connection and responsibility people have towards the land is of dire importance. But most people move through their lives completely isolated from nature. This short line highlights the importance of nurturing that bond and doing the work to care for the land as it cares so completely for us.
LAUREN BOND: I’m particularly fond of Sol Ring. I love the idea of characters who you might not expect together finding shared joy in creativity.
BUT WHY THO: Whenever I’ve spoken with women at Magic events, “The Gathering” part of the game is what always comes up, whether that’s facilitating the act of gathering or doing work to create a space for women to feel comfortable coming together.
The focus of “Their Magic is Limitless” seems to be the way women form bonds across professions, friendships, love, and legacy. It’s easy to feel isolated in today’s age. How has working on this Secret Lair drop changed or solidified the importance of collective action?
SLOANE CHUNG LEONG: There’s a Hawaiian saying: A`ohe hana nui ke alu`ia, or no task is too big when done together by all. I believe nothing long-lasting can be achieved alone, and by working together, we make it easier to accomplish our goals. This holds true in all parts of my life, from the secular to the creative.
STEPHANIE CHEUNG: Each time I’ve taken part in philanthropic endeavors or collective action, I’m reminded that change moves at the speed of people. If you don’t take the time to build trust and relationships, what you build won’t last the long run. And it’s a reminder to soothe and expand my expectations of how people can or will show up. While the goal for change is paramount, it’s more important to meet people where they’re at.
KAT MORGAN: A large part of this drop’s appeal for me was about making good on the promise of our full name. Feeling seen, welcomed, and represented fosters more than just private interest. This was a really special opportunity to find that connectivity among women from different teams, and to often feel so in sync on our work despite being very different from each other. It was a real joy to make this with them.
BUT WHY THO: How does it feel to not only have helped craft a Secret Lair that will speak to an audience often overlooked, but more importantly to have helped do a tangible good by raising money for the Global Women Fund?
LAUREN BOND: This drop was an incredible honor to work on. Each person brought so much care, enthusiasm, and passion. We were able to push the boundaries of what we might do in a normal drop, from fiction to behind-the-scenes articles to customized packaging. I could not have asked for a better group of people to work alongside.
STEPHANIE CHEUNG: I’m so happy that I could be a part of such an incredible project and partnership. This project is powerful, playful, and heartwarming. As a queer woman of color, I’m always on the lookout to expand perceptions and make a world that younger me could find belonging. In these current times, it’s incredibly important to remember that all our struggles, AND HOPES are intertwined.
ANH NGUYEN: I feel a sense of pride and joy to be able to highlight incredible women in the Magic universe and to show their strong leadership. I hope this sense of pride spreads to all women who see and play with the cards. All pieces stem from my admiration for my mentors throughout my life. I hope this drop communicated just how important all women are in fostering a strong, caring, and empathetic community around them.
