Netflix is working with Yeon Sang-ho again, and this time it’s a joint production between the top Korean and Japanese creators teaming up for a reboot of Toho’s legendary tokusatsu film The Human Vapor. But, it’s important to note that this isn’t just any reboot, it’s a completely reimagined story with a brand-new narrative fit for television.
The series, which debuts on Netflix on July 2, 2026, is written and executive produced by Yeon Sang-ho, the creator behind Train to Busan, Hellbound, and Parasyte: The Grey. Joining writer Yeon is Director Shinzo Katayama, known for his studies of human darkness and madness in Gannibal, and more.

The Human Vapor is also serving as the debut role for UTA, a newcomer who was selected by the creatives with the goal of finding a “blank canvas.” But UTA is also surrounded by a stellar Japanese cast, with Shun Oguri and Yu Aoi. But it’s not just the acting that has priority. The production team features VFX by Shirogumi (the Academy Award–winning team for Godzilla Minus One).
What is The Human Vapor?
While rooted in Toho’s 1960 legendary film The Human Vapor (directed by Ishiro Honda and written by Takeshi Kimura), this reboot features an entirely new story. The project brings together Toho, WOWPOINT, and Netflix.
The official synopsis from Netflix:
“The world recoils in shock when a person suddenly swells and explodes on live television. The culprit behind this unprecedented murder is the “Human Vapor” — a man who can transform his body into gas and slip through any barrier. He announces his killings in advance and carries them out, seemingly mocking the authorities as they struggle to close in on him. With each new incident, he corrodes society with a formless, pervasive fear.”
