As the fall festival season heats up on the eve of Telluride, the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and more, certain titles are arriving with genuine anticipation. One such selection is the film La Bola Negra, from filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (“Los Javis”).
The film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it garnered critical acclaim and earned Calvo and Ambrossi the Best Director award. Now, with additional festival screenings and a theatrical release prior to its debut on Netflix, the film is looking to build an even greater audience. Written by Calvo, Ambrossi, and Alberto Conejero, this marks the filmmakers’ first foray into film since their 2017 feature, Holy Camp!

Netflix debuted the first teaser trailer along with first-look posters that promise an enthralling, hypnotic tale about three men over the course of three years: 1932, 1937, and 2017. From some A-list names to actors on the cusp of major breakout success, such as the debut performance from musician Guitarricadelafuente, the teaser promises some lush landscapes and epic scale drama.
Spanning nearly a century of Spanish history, the teaser hints at the blending of timelines, queer identity, love stories and belonging.

Across three distinct eras, the intertwined lives of three men remain bound by a shared thread of desire, sexuality, enduring pain, and the lasting weight of their complex legacies.
Carlos (Quifes) longs to belong in a fractured Spain. Sebastián (Guitarricadelafuente) finds connection across enemy lines. And Alberto (González) uncovers a long-buried family secret — one that finally gives voice to truths the past tried to erase.
