Wizards of the Coast announced a significant new collaboration that’s set to bring a fresh, single-player action-adventure experience to the beloved world of Dungeons & Dragons. They’ve signed an exclusive publishing agreement with Giant Skull, a newly formed studio headed by industry veteran Stig Asmussen, known for his directorial work on God of War III, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

In a release to press John Hight, President of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming at Hasbro offered a quote:

“Stig and the team at Giant Skull are exactly the type of exceptionally talented creators we want to work with, and I’m so happy to be reuniting with him on this new project. Worldbuilding and storytelling is in our DNA, and this collaboration reflects our evolution and commitment to our Playing to Win Strategy, building a stronger presence in digital play. We look forward to revealing more about this brand-new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game in the future.”

Hight previously worked with Asmussen on God of War, highlighting his confidence in Asmussen’s artistry and expertise. This untitled D&D project is currently in development for PC and console, with more details promised later. The partnership signals a significant step for Wizards of the Coast in expanding its digital gaming footprint and for Giant Skull in making its mark on the industry.

Asmussen echoed Hight’s excitement, and emphasized Giant Skull’s mission: “Our talented and experienced team at Giant Skull is built on creativity and curiosity. We aim to craft a rich new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat, and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”

What is Giant Skull?

Giant Skull boasts a highly experienced team, many of whom have contributed to award-winning and globally successful franchises. Stig Asmussen’s impressive resume speaks for itself, having most recently directed the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi titles. Before that, he served as Game Director for God of War III and Art Director for God of War II at Sony Santa Monica. The studio’s elite developers are leveraging Unreal Engine 5 to build this new single-player action-adventure game from the ground up.

Wizards of the Coast keeps expanding their gaming partnerships.

This new D&D title is just one piece of a larger strategy for Wizards of the Coast to bolster its digital game offerings. The company revealed a snapshot of other exciting projects underway at its North American studios:

  • Archetype Entertainment (Austin, TX): Hard at work on EXODUS, a sci-fi RPG promising an emotional narrative.
  • Atomic Arcade (Raleigh, NC): Recently teased two new images from their first project, a game centered on Snake Eyes from G.I. JOE.
  • Invoke (Montreal, QC): In full production on another Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure game focused on magic.
  • Skeleton Key (Austin, TX): Developing a project that blends suspense, horror, and memorable gameplay.
  • The Magic: The Gathering Arena team continues to expand the popular digital card game with new content and features.

This robust pipeline demonstrates Wizards of the Coast’s significant investment in digital gaming, bringing both new IPs and beloved franchises to players across various genres.
