GalaXic Baseball League, Acky Bright’s latest manga series, takes America’s favorite pastime to the stars, blending the competitive and inspirational spirit of sports with a sci-fi theme and some of the world’s best and biggest names in professional baseball.

GalaXic Baseball League takes place in the far-off, distant future, where baseball has become a high-stakes interplanetary competition in which teams from across the universe battle for glory. The series follows Gaia, Earth’s struggling baseball team, as it is on the brink of being expelled from the league.
GalaXic Baseball League stars real-life MLB players in an epic intergalactic battle.

With the team’s future on the line, Luna, the team’s new general manager, along with longtime stadium staffer Sol, steps up to find a way to turn things around before it is too late. Luna and Sol’s plan to save Gaia brings real-life MLB players: Aaron Judge, Fernando Tatís Jr., Jazz Chisholm Jr., Kyle Schwarber, Paul Skenes, Shohei Ohtani, and more into the epic intergalactic battle in the GXBL Survival Tournament.

BUT WHY THO: Your manga, GalaXic Baseball League, combines baseball with science fiction. What was the initial inspiration to combine sports and sci-fi genres in this story?
ACKY BRIGHT: When I watched the World Baseball Classic series last year, many people were impressed with the dramatic games, and they would say things like, “Wow, reality has finally surpassed fiction.” And at the time, I thought to myself, what would it look like if I made a sports manga that surpassed reality? This sci-fi manga is the result of thinking about that.
BUT WHY THO: What makes baseball a great fit as the foundation of this story?
ACKY BRIGHT: I’m Japanese, and for us, baseball is a really familiar sport. Of course, other sports like soccer are also popular, but baseball is most compatible with Japanese people. Also, baseball is a team sport that has a lot of dynamic action, making it a perfect fit for a manga story.
BUT WHY THO: One of the most unique things about your series is seeing real-life major league baseball players like Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Fernando Tatís Jr., Jazz Chisholm Jr., Kyle Schwarber, and Paul Skenes in a manga. How did you decide which players would become part of the story’s roster?
ACKY BRIGHT: The players were decided with a series of factors. First, they need to become a team. There are the positions they play, and then there’s their technique and skill level. This project has been in development since 2024, so we’ve been thinking through the decisions for a long time, examining active players, and strategizing not just based on popularity but also on the balance among manga characters.

BUT WHY THO: Your artistic style has been described as “kawakakkoii,” as it combines cute and cool aesthetics. How can readers see that balance of “kawakakkoii” in this new series?
ACKY BRIGHT: They can see Luna as a strong female character, the aliens as not too story-driven, and they can be cute sometimes, like Toriyama-sensei’s work: cool but cute. Hopefully, that hits the mark with fans, too. Especially because it’s not like I can draw the players as cute. So it’s a balance. Also, I just want to mention that it is One-Punch Man’s Murata-sensei who saw my doujinshi and called my style “kawakakkoii,” and I just kept using that.
BUT WHY THO: What did GalaXic Baseball League demand from you visually, and did that differ or challenge you differently than some of your previous projects?
ACKY BRIGHT: I am able to express myself freely. Manga is a type of déformé (an exaggerated art style where characters are drawn with disproportionately large heads, oversized eyes, and small, stubby bodies). And when it becomes serialized for long-term consumption, I hope it remains accessible to all generations. I focus on subtractive lines compared to my detailed line work in my other projects.

BUT WHY THO: Sports manga hold a special place in many fans’ hearts for telling inspirational stories about perseverance, ambition, teamwork, and believing in oneself. What do you hope readers take away from GalaXic Baseball League?
ACKY BRIGHT: Anyone who doesn’t know baseball or the rules of baseball can still enjoy it. But hardcore fans can also recognize the quirks and quibbles of the individual players. I hope readers will discover what makes baseball great and see that even the aliens have a reason to fight.
Sports are also about respect. I hope the story encourages the audience to have more empathy in general and to feel that.
BUT WHY THO: Do you have a favorite sports manga, and if so, did it inspire you to create GalaXic Baseball League? Are there specific elements, such as the characters or themes from said series, that inspired you to bring them into your own series?
ACKY BRIGHT: I have so many sports manga that I like. I like them all. In particular, I really like Dokaben by Shinji Mizushima. I read that one many, many times. Adachi-sensei’s Touch also influenced me greatly. There are a lot of Captain Tsubasa vibes in GXBL. I hope my manga can be perceived as crazier than the sum of all my influences.
At its core, GalaXic Baseball League is a beautiful testament to the power of sports and storytelling, bringing people from all walks of life together. Sports and manga have crossed cultural and geographical boundaries for years, creating shared experiences for fans of all ages. Bright’s GalaXic Baseball League sets out with the same goal in mind.
Bright’s imaginative approach and style invite manga fans to see baseball in a brand new light while also telling an original story that celebrates competition, empathy, and teamwork. Whether a huge baseball fan or just loves a good underdog story, the GalaXic Baseball League gives readers plenty to root for.
