If you have been following EA Sports College Football 27’s month since launch online, then you know how many people have been complaining about the run, or more specifically, how hard it is to stop. The CFB 27 August Update is bringing in new blocking improvements; EA Sports developers are looking to adjust it so that you can still pound the rock (which was one of the many advertised gameplay changes this year) but have a little more of a challenge while doing so.

In addition to gameplay updates, Dynasty is also getting some crucial bug fixes for some of its systems, like patching out that fact that “Limited Practice” didn’t serve a benefit to recovering from Wear & Tear for most players compared to “Full Practice” or fixing the issue that made competring school visits (visits with multiple players of the same position) show as beneficial instead of detrimental. Add in that the Title Update also improves stunts, Cover 3, and some Dynasty NIL issues. Oh yeah, and like always, EA Sports CFB 27 is still getting pageantry additions, including new uniforms and crowd formations.

While the CFB 27 August Update makes many changes, some things didn’t get fixed but are “On The Radar.” The most interesting of which are: hurry-up-affecting custom adjustments, speed boosting, man coverage effectiveness, hot routes not registering in certain coverage checks, and more.

You can head over to EA Sports’ official Campus Huddle post here to go in depth on all of the patch notes for the CFB 27 August Update or keep scrolling for the highlights below.

CFB 27 August Update: Gameplay Changes

Blocking Improvements Are Here

EA Sports College Football 27

HIGHLIGHT: The devs explained in the Campus Huddle notes that the changes made for pancake blocks are a part of a “two-pronged approach” to get at the root of the issue. Pancake blocking has been a top user complaint since launch, and with the CFB 27 August Update, the developers are addressing it.

As of this update, the developers have reduced the frequency of pancake blocks and made coaching adjustments, fine-tuning situations where pancakes were being triggered when they shouldn’t have been, and also adjusted aggressive blocking to balance outcomes.

Other Changes:

  • Improved receiver vs. defensive back block outcomes so dominant wins occur at a more balanced rate and feel more situational.
  • Improved backfield blocker behavior on chip-and-release assignments and fixed an issue where chip-and-release blockers were taking bad angles
  • Improved play action pass protection so blockers drop back to a more appropriate depth.
Pass Rush & Defensive Front Improvements

HIGHLIGHT: Running stunts became my default when the pass rush fell apart in Madden 26, and now, I run them constantly. This also makes the fixes seen in the CFB 27 August Update for stunts very important. Chief among them is that the devs have fixed multiple issues where Pirate Stunts could leave rushers unblocked, and improved defensive tackle loop behavior on stunts to reduce collisions and spacing issues. This, with the fact that they also improved run block double-team shed triggers for defenders, will make stopping the run a little easier.

Other Changes:

  • Improved Jump the Snap timing feedback so it better matches the actual timing window.
  • Added Player Lock UI feedback for successful pass rush timing and adjusted the Jump the Snap timing window to improve pass rush feel.
  • Improved defender ability to shed blocks in the proper run-fit direction.
Defensive Catch Moments

HIGHLIGHT: Passing has gotten harder in CFB 27, and it’s by design. One of the ways the CRB 27 August Update also impacts this is by improving defenders’ behavior on jump balls and interception attempts, allowing for higher catch points. Additionally, the devs have improved catch tackle interactions and knockout chances in Contested Scenarios.

Coverage & Defensive Logic

EA Sports College Football 27 - defense overhaul hands-on impressions

HIGHLIGHT: Cover 3 is getting the most substantial adjustments in the CFB 27 August Updates. It includes improved logic against 4 Strong, with the weakside seam flat playing in tempo, as well as fixing the Cover 3 Blitz’s outside third defender to make sure he goes through the intended logic, and more that you can read below.

  • Fixed an issue in Cover 3 Match Skinny Checks where the #3 receivers could be left open on a corner route in Gun Trips TE when the tight end was on a drag route.
  • Fixed an issue where the Safety would slow down in Buzz Coverage and 3 High Structure Defenses
  • Fixed an issue in Cover 3 Match where hook/curl defenders would still play skate rules runs vs bunch after Underneath or Over The Tops coverage adjustments were made.

HIGHLIGHT: The devs have also adjusted CPU coaching responses, with different coverage checks and plaster settings to make them truer to simulation. This means that now, more aggressive CPU coaches will take aggressive checks with tighter plaster behavior. On the other hand, Conservative coaches emphasize safer adjustments.

Coaching Adjustments

Highlight: Untarget User Defender is going away. While it was a great feature for run-heavy teams, the devs have removed Untarget User Defender for run plays only. Those looking to pound the rock will have to use Target Defender on run plays at the line of scrimmage. You can find other Untarget Defender updates below.

  • Fixed an issue where Untarget Defender was not working correctly when showing blitz.
  • Fixed an issue where Untarget User Defender could apply while controlling a defensive lineman.
Playbooks Additions

Below are the additions that the CFB 27 August Update adds to the game:

  • Cover 4 Zone, Cover 6 Zone, and Cover 9 Zone plays to select defensive playbooks (Safeties are not run fits for these plays)
  • 12 new Press Quarters plays to the Press Quarters playbook
  • 3 new blitzes to the 3-3-5 Odd Ghost Playbook
  • The 4-3 Under Wide to the 4-2-5 Zone Pressure playbook

Dynasty Blueprint Changes

HIGHLIGHT: One of the larger issues in Dynasty (other than those pesky MUT MTX) at launch has been that CPU schools do not make moves to improve themselves in line with their NIL spend, and could be risky to move to as a user. Now, in the CFB 27 August Update, the devs are addressing that. CPU teams will not purchase additional, non-refundable equipment that does not improve that grade; CPU-hired Support Staff during the preseason are fully refundable, so players joining an Online Dynasty can recover and reallocate those Dynasty Points.

Other Changes:

  • Added new week summary screen at End of Season recap showing your new budget and any changes year over year.
  • Added “NIL” to the “reason for leaving” column within Players Leaving.
  • When offering NIL to a recruit and offering Dynasty Points to a coordinator, you can now press the right stick to the right to offer the maximum amount and right stick left to offer the minimum amount.
AD Expectations Changes
  • Added animations when passing/failing goals and when new goals are awarded.
  • New goals now appear at preseason week as opposed to Week 0. If a goal is invalid, meaning it can no longer be completed, after advancing from preseason to Week 0, we will give you a new goal on week advance.
  • Fixed an issue where you could receive “Recruit X Players from your state” and there would not be enough players in the state to recruit.
  • Updated Central Michigan rivalry goal to be Western Michigan.
Coaching Carousel Changes
  • Rebalanced coach firing logic to prevent first-year head coaches from being fired and making it more difficult for high-prestige coaches to be fired from lower-prestige schools, and adjusted coach retirement logic to increase target retirement age.
  • Fixed an issue where you could not make offers to coordinators when you were previously a coordinator and you just accepted a head coaching job.
  • Added new columns to coordinator hiring screen: Archetype, Prestige, Pipeline, Level, New Coaches
  • Coastal Carolina, North Texas, and Southern Miss have all had coaches added from their schools.
Weekly Practice Plan

HIGHLIGHT: One of the more annoying elements of the new practice feature was that you would have to take time to flip through the “No Practice” and “Limited Practice” choices to see which one really benefited your player. Sometimes a “Low” risk of injury with No Practice would move to “High” when in “Limited Practice” but would drop to “Low” when Full Practice was selected. Now, well, it’s fixed, with the devs calling out that they fixed the issue where full practice could heal more wear and tear than limited practice.

General Dynasty Changes

HIGHLIGHT: Injuries have been more than annoying this year, and the CFB 27 August Update is addressing that too. That has made the gameplay injury slider default 10 to reduce the number of injuries that Dynasties are experiencing. The devs also explained that those with existing Dynasties would not receive this default update and encouraged them to turn the slider down to 10 as well.

Other Changes:

  • Updated Pro Potential grade to factor in current roster composition and projected draft rounds of current players as a secondary input.
  • Players with the Pro Potential dealbreaker now have a higher chance of going pro.
  • Added Shamrock Series game featuring Wisconsin and Notre Dame at Lambeau Field in Week 1 of Dynasty or RTG (Must start a new Dynasty)
  • Fixed an issue with Hawaii’s proximity to home grade being F for players from Hawaii.
  • Updated generators to increase the quality of recruits at highest tiers.
  • Fixed an issue where prospects who did not have you in their top 10 would appear with an interest level of “10th” in the recruiting board.
  • Fixed an issue where competitive visits displayed a green box instead of a red one.
  • Fixed an issue where gem recruits could have attributes above 99.
  • Added dev trait column in the Encourage Transfer spreadsheet.

CFB 27 August Update: Road To Glory

Draft Projection & Legacy Score
  • New Legacy Score and Draft Projection screen.
  • Fixed an issue where your Draft Projection could drop unexpectedly after transferring.
  • Fixed an issue where your legacy score could reset to 0 after your first game played if you were a bench player.
Transfer Portal
  • Fixed an issue where users were unable to transfer their senior season.
  • Fixed an issue in the Transfer Portal where you could already be committed to the team you verbally committed to coming out of HS.
  • Fixed an issue where scholarship bonuses would not be applied if you stayed on your current team after the first season.
  • Added new recruiting scenarios with coaches when you enter the transfer portal.
General Road to Glory Changes

HIGHLIGHT: The CFB 27 August Update is also addressing Cap Breakers progression. Cap Breakers progression has been updated with the devs removing certain single-game achievement triggers that were awarding Cap Breakers more frequently; this was a bug, not a feature.

That said, Cap Breakers will continue to be earned through season and career milestones, awards, and sustained performance. In the Campus Huddle, the developer note highlighted that this was in response to a use exploit.
