One Piece Episode 1168 closed the first half of the season with the Harley, arguably the biggest lore reveal the series has ever dropped. One Piece Episode 1169, “The Legend Lurking in Elbaph – The Identity of the Mountain-Eater,” pulls back from that scale entirely.

The cour 2 premiere introduces a character fans have waited decades to meet and lets him carry the episode on personality alone. The gear change is noticeable after the weight of the Harley, but Scopper Gaban’s (Toshiyuki Morikawa) anime debut makes the cooldown worth it.

One Piece Episode 1169 opens with Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, and Road pushing deeper into Aurust Castle looking for Loki’s key. What they find first is a creepy voice. A stranger calling himself “Ya” steps out, already aware of who Luffy is and talking about the fall of Kaido like it’s old neighborhood gossip. Ya doesn’t posture or monologue. He talks to Luffy the way a man who sailed with Gol D. Roger would.

One Piece Episode 1169 continues the Elbaph trend of letting the humor shine through character moments.

Jinbei, Brook, and Usopp listen to the giants

The comedy in One Piece Episode 1169 lands well. Road panics at the mysterious voice while Luffy barrels straight past any caution in pursuit of the key. Gaban watches the chaos with a grin that says this is not the first time he’s been watching young pirates stumble through Elbaph. The humor works here the same way it worked during the best stretches of this arc. Let the characters play off each other and trust the audience to laugh without hammering the punchline.

Back in the village, Usopp hears a story from the giants about a Roger Pirate who took down an entire enemy crew with two axes and stripped a mountain bare doing it. The Mountain-Eater legend builds through the retelling, and when One Piece Episode 1169 connects it to the old man in the castle, the payoff hits. Toei earns the reveal by letting the two threads run side by side instead of rushing the connection.

Gaban reveals that his wife is Ripley and their son is Colon. If that name rings a bell, it should. Ripley was the teacher at the Walrus School in One Piece Episode 1164, the one explaining King Harald’s educational reforms to the crew. Knowing she’s married to one of the Pirate King’s closest allies puts those earlier classroom scenes in a completely different light. The woman teaching giant children about Elbaph’s history is raising a son with a man who lived it.

Scopper Gaban is a welcome and thrilling addition, adding greater depth to the world.

Scopper Gaban, the Mountain Eater, in a flashback

The pacing does feel like a step down from One Piece Episode 1168. That installment blew the doors off the arc’s endgame mythology, leaving the whole thing standing on a fault line. One Piece Episode 1169 eases off and settles into character work and setup.

For a cour premiere, that’s the right move. One Piece Episode 1169 needs to reset the board and bring in a new face. But the transition still registers. After the scale of the Harley, a treasure-room hunt and a slow identity reveal can feel a tad off.

Gaban also drops a line about Shanks being the only person who could capture Loki (Yuichi Nakamura). That thread has been tightening since One Piece Episode 1166, and hearing it from a Roger Pirate hits differently than hearing it secondhand.

While it doesn’t hit the mythology highs of the Harley, it’s a strong start to Cour 2.

Zoro, Luffy, and Nami with Gaban

One Piece Episode 1169 saves its strongest beat for the final minutes. Nami finds the hidden room behind the throne, picked clean by thieves, with only one object left: Loki’s key. The thieves were too afraid to touch it. That single detail says more about Loki than any other monologue ever could. The instant Luffy reaches for it, Gaban snatches it first. He tells Luffy that if he wants the key, he’ll have to take it by force.

It doesn’t play as an obstruction. Gaban wants to know what Roger’s spiritual heir is made of before handing over the power to free something Elbaph locked away for a reason. Luffy and Loki’s first conversation already raised the question of whether freeing the giant prince is even the right call. Zoro is still pushing back on the idea. Gaban putting himself between Luffy and that key raises the stakes on a decision the crew hasn’t settled yet.

One Piece Episode 1169 isn’t the explosive return some fans might have wanted after the Harley. It’s quieter and looser, built around a character debut rather than a mythology bomb. But Scopper Gaban’s arrival is a moment One Piece has been building toward since Buggy’s flashback in the Orange Town Arc, and Toei gives it room to breathe.
