REVIEW: ‘One Piece’ Episode 1166 — “Encountering Loki – Gunko Of The Knights Of God”

One Piece Episode 1165 had its fun moments, but the most urgent thread barely saw the light of day. One Piece Episode 1166, “Encountering Loki – Gunko of the Knights of God,” keeps the celebration going but actually gives it direction. The conversations carry weight this time, and the scattered pieces of the first cour are starting to pull together.

The feast runs leaner here. Usopp (Kappei Yamaguchi) spinning his Oars takedown into a tall tale for the giants is Usopp at his best, and the giants buying every word sells the bit. Sanji (Hiroaki Hirata) melts down the second he’s surrounded by giant women. Nami (Akemi Okamura) all but drafts Road into her personal entourage, and Zoro (Kazuya Nakai) puts an edge on it with a threat Road clearly takes seriously. They land fast and move on. The comedy in One Piece Episode 1166 hits because it knows when to cut away.

Even during the lighter stretches, One Piece Episode 1166 keeps an edge running underneath the comedy. The Straw Hats are having a great time, but the episode never fully lets go of the tension building around them. There’s an awareness that something bigger is moving just out of frame. The fun and the foreboding sit side by side here in a way the arc hasn’t quite managed until now.

The threads continue to tangle throughout One Piece Episode 1166. 

The real upgrade is what’s happening between the laughs. The giants’ discussion of Nika and Elbaph’s spiritual history is fascinating stuff, the kind of mythology One Piece thrives on when it trusts the audience to keep up. It raises more questions than it answers.

Shanks’ name surfaces in connection to Loki (Yuichi Nakamura), adding another thread to a situation that keeps getting more tangled. For an arc that spent its opening stretch soaking in Elbaph’s culture, this is where that groundwork begins to push the story forward rather than just add flavor.

Hearing the giants talk about Nika from their own spiritual tradition hits differently than the scattered references the series has built around the Sun God so far. Elbaph has its own relationship with Nika, and One Piece Episode 1166 hints at a mythology that runs deeper than what the World Government has tried to bury. It makes Elbaph feel essential to the endgame, not just the next island on the Log Pose.

Loki, the Accursed Prince, continues to prove himself as a dangerous endgame player.

One Piece Episode 1166‘s title does oversell the balance, though. The encounter between Gunko (Sumire Uesaka) and Loki takes up a small slice of the runtime, but what’s there hits hard. Gunko’s Arrow Arrow Fruit demonstration against a giant wolf is vicious and efficient. It tells you everything about how dangerous she is without needing a full fight scene. Loki’s refusal to join the Knights of God shows exactly why the World Government wanted him in the first place.

He mocks the World Nobles and declares he’ll channel every negative emotion he’s carrying into destroying the world. No hesitation, no political maneuvering. Nakamura’s delivery cuts through with a defiance that makes the Accursed Prince’s limited screen time feel earned. Since One Piece Episode 1160 first put him on screen, Loki has been the most dangerous new player in One Piece’s endgame. That hasn’t changed.

What makes the scene stick is the context around it. Loki is chained in the Underworld with nothing on his side, and he still won’t bend. Refusing the World Government from a cell says more about the kind of threat he is than any bounty could. The Straw Hats walked into Elbaph looking for Shanks and found a powder keg instead. Whatever the arc has planned for the Accursed Prince, keeping him locked up was never going to be a permanent solution.

One Piece Episode 1166 shows that the Elbaph arc has teeth.

Visually, One Piece Episode 1166 holds the season’s standard. Toei’s Elbaph continues to look good without reaching the highs of One Piece Episode 1163‘s Robin reunion or One Piece Episode 1162‘s Rainbow Bridge sequence. The consistency is there, and across a full cour, that matters more than isolated spikes.

One Piece Episode 1166 is where Elbaph’s first cour starts building real forward energy. The comedy is tight, and the worldbuilding has teeth. Loki’s brief defiance keeps pulling the arc into dangerous territory. The pacing has turned a corner from where One Piece Episode 1165 left things, and with the Gunko confrontation now on the table, the arc feels ready to pick up speed.
