During the Future Games Show Summer Showcase, 11 bit studios revealed the first DLC coming to their survival game, The Alters. The Alters: Last Variable is a roughly 20-hour DLC that follows Jan Scientist(s): Jan Scientists, with their perfectly aligned minds, can offer the expertise needed to unravel the phenomenon of the Oasis.

In this 20-hour expansion, new mechanics are introduced, offering new opportunities to grow and learn with the alters as they navigate the Oasis. With an underground base to build and a refined gameplay loop centered on terraforming parts of the planet into lush, oasis-like biomes, The Alters: Last Variable has you operating a new set of alters that may not operate quite the way you intend.

Unravelling the mystery of the Oasis requires specialized analysis from specialized alters – a Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, or Physicist. Yet each Jan has his own view on what science truly means. While you descend into a years-long cryosleep in your underground base, waiting for the planet’s scorching sun to retreat, those working in Field Labs don’t have that privilege. As they age without that protection, can the vulnerability of time still change them? It’s a fascinating question, one in which you might uncovered in The Alters: Last Variable.

Key Features of The Alters: Last Variable

Explore new regions and terraform them:
  • Each transformation shifts the landscape, spawns new resources, and awakens the planet’s defensive mechanism.
  • This means expect more frequent earthquakes, severe radiation waves, and other threats that can threaten your alters.
Expand underground and survive cycles
  • Build in different soil types, construct new components, and research new modules like the Cryosleep Chamber.
  • This will buy you more time and let you witness the long-term effects of your scientific actions.
Develop new tech and set field labs:
  • Each planetary cooldown offers a brief window to explore a dramatically changed surface.
  • Field Labs introduces new assignments for alters to continue their work while you cryosleep.

What is The Alters about?

What if all your choices turned out to be an illusion? That’s the question haunting Jan Dolski, the protagonist. Jan may be the sole survivor of a crash landing on a distant planet, but he won’t be alone long. To operate the mobile base—and escape the planet—he must create alternate versions of himself.

These “alters” come from lives he never lived, walking paths he never took. They are crucial for survival, but they may resent him, because some of them believe they lived better versions of his life. Is escape a selfish goal? Will you treat different Jan’s as mere resources or autonomous beings deserving of empathy? In The Alters, survival is personal.

As you navigate survival and moral dilemmas, you will explore a branching narrative filled with captivating character dynamics and challenging decisions.

Where can I play The Alters?

The Alters is available to play now on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Alters: Last Variable releases July 13, 2026, on PC and console.
