During the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Anaheim, California, the keynote address focused on the massive updates coming in 7.5x and Patch 8.0, which is the MMORPG’s seventh expansion, Evercold. While Evercold is starting a new chapter for the critically acclaimed MMO, one of the most exciting announcements was FFXIV on Switch 2 and the expansion of the game’s free trial.

Community has always been at the heart of what makes FFXIV a video game that you can keep coming back to without worry of having a hostile community experience as you learn how to play again or for the first time.

The doors to the FFXIV community have already been open to console players on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Now, FFXIV on Switch 2 is a reality. Having already been playable on the Steam Deck, on-the-go gaming is an investment that expands the community in a meaningful way.

FFXIV On  Switch 2 Is Coming

FFXIV Fan Fest - Evercold Patch 8.0 Updates

While the mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV has been available in China (with a global release TBD), the one announcement that got the bulk of the auditorium on their feet was the news that FFXIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2. Launching in August 2026, the rollout will be gradual.

This roadmap features a one-month Early Access period, during which players will have online fees waived, making it free while Square Enix works on server stability. However, while the existing payment structure has always allowed players to play on any device (PC and console) with a single monthly subscription fee and a single purchase of the game, the Switch version will push players to buy a new license for the Switch.

There will be no mandatory monthly subscription fee. Additionally, players who purchased the game on other platforms will have the chance to buy the Switch version at 50% off.

Expansion of the free trial is active with Patch 7.5

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? With an expanded free trial, you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Shadowbringers expansion up to level 80 for free with no restrictions on playtime!
