Chinese animation is finally getting the attention it deserves with Ne Zha II‘s success and theatrical run from A24, and The Legend of Hei 2 is the next animated feature film from China to hit US theaters. GKIDS has been doing heavy lifting in the space for quite some time, ensuring that international animated films make their way to North America. The Legend of Hei 2 is the latest title for the distributor to pick up.

GKIDS has acquired the theatrical and home entertainment rights for the Chinese box office sensation The Legend of Hei 2, with a theatrical release set for September 5, 2025, in limited theaters. The film is a sequel to the 2019 feature The Legend of Hei and is derived from the animated series The Legend of Luo Xiaohei, created by Chinese animation studio Hanmu Chunhua (HMCH).

The film’s original creator, MTJJ, returned to direct the new installment, which is produced by the animation studio HMCH. Since its release in China on July 18, the film has grossed over $49 million in its domestic market, with GKIDS’ Vice President of Distribution, Chance Huskey, noting that the dazzling animation and emotional story will resonate with new audiences.

What is The Legend of Hei 2 about?

When an attack shatters the fragile peace between the spirit world and humanity, Hei teams up with Luye, the last disciple of his Shifu Wuxian, to expose a conspiracy that threatens both realms – and the bond they’ve sworn to protect.

With gorgeous, hand-drawn animation from directors MTJJ and Gu Jie, The Legend of Hei 2 is the long-awaited follow-up to the 2019 feature The Legend of Hei, delivering an emotional and action-packed story that will resonate with audiences, new and returning.
