Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition, developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, is more of what made the base game great. The excellent samurai adventure now comes repackaged for PS5, adding plenty, from a story-focused expansion to a new roguelike mode. It’s all great, giving players plenty of reason to return to Ezo.

We loved Ghost of Yotei last year, giving it a 9, saying, “Ghost of Yōtei is an incredible sequel that builds upon its predecessor while still finding ways to stand out on its own. The attention to detail is impeccable, and the adventure is so full of life that it remains engaging from start to finish.”

All of that remains true in Echoes of Sekigahara, the new story expansion. Ghost of Tsushima, Yotei‘s predecessor, added the Iki Island expansion after launch, slotting into the main story’s narrative. It was an intensely personal story for Jin, that game’s protagonist, and Echoes of Sekigahara acts as the same for Atsu. It does a lot of interesting narrative work, filling in the story for both Atsu’s past and the first member of the Yotei Six you take out: the Snake.

The new story expansion, Echoes of Sekigahara, explores Atsu’s past.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition

Ghost of Yotei kicks off with Atsu killing the Snake, then continues with the remaining members, never really stopping to look back at the first name crossed off the list. Echoes of Sekigahara does that instead, and does so with some interesting twists. The Snake, despite being an evil monster, wasn’t all that despised by the people he led, a known evil who did take care of his people. The Vipers fight to fill the power vacuum left by his defeat, without much cause for concern for those they hurt.

Atsu has to come face to face with the consequences of her actions, all while dealing with the resurgence of Nagato the Handsome, a figure from her past. The narrative jumps back and forth between the Battle of Sekigahara years prior and the present, showing Atsu and Nagato’s history. There’s some real vulnerability to Atsu here, and she’s portrayed in a new light compared to the core narrative, and it works really well.

Echoes of Sekigahara takes about 5 hours to complete, with an extra 5 or so to clean up other objectives and side content. The new area is as gorgeous as ever, with a giant mountain looming in the distance and dense forests. A thick fog rolls over the area, and the moments when it breaks and the sun shines through are some of the most gorgeous in the entire game. Ghost of Yotei is still one of, if not the best-looking, games on the PS5, with some truly stunning vistas and environmental and lighting work.

The Complete Edition adds new weapons, new sideplots, and a brand-new roguelike mode.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition

The side content is some of the game’s best, with one mission focusing on Atsu’s wolf companion that gives more history to her furry friend. Their dedication to one another shines through, especially when things get dark as some of the missions dive deep into the wolves’ history. There’s a lot of great narrative work done across the side stories, and they’re worth adventuring through.

Alongside the narrative add-ons, there are some gameplay additions as well, including massive weapons, new armor sets, new dyes, and more. Massive weapons are a blast to use, and deliver huge, hulking pieces of death and destruction as Atsu swings them around and breaks them over enemies. They’re a fun new way to engage with combat, alongside new armor sets and cosmetic tweaks that all come together to make for a fantastic new chapter in Atsu’s story.

The other major addition in the Complete Edition is Most Wanted, a new roguelike mode. You accept bounties, all with a member of the Yotei Six waiting at the end, and fight through enemies to get to them. Atsu is the only character available at first, but three more wait in the wings to be unlocked, including Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai.

Most Wanted is a blast, letting players collect bounties as different players.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition

Most Wanted is a blast, continuing PlayStation’s streak of roguelike add-ons to their titles. While it may not reach the narrative heights of God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, the combat in Ghost of Yotei feels so good that running through these contracts is a ton of fun. The combat sandbox here is also varied enough to keep you coming back, as you unlock new weapons and boons on each run. They’re not just straightforward stat buffs either, bringing in lightning strikes for concurrent attacks or summoning wolves to take out other enemies.

Most Wanted works so well because it keeps giving you something new to reach for between runs. Whether it’s universal upgrades that affect all the characters, or new charms and weapons, spending your hard-earned coins comes easily enough. The best part is that you don’t have to buy the new characters. They unlock once you spend enough coins, so you don’t have to choose between critical upgrades and a new combatant.

They all feel different too, with varying starting weapons and loadouts. Atsu comes slicing through with dual katanas and being able to summon wolves, while Oyuki has a kusarigama and rifle. Playing as Jin is a ton of fun too, with much of his combat kit returning here. Most Wanted gives you plenty to do, and it nails that roguelike feeling of calling you in for just one more run.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition is the definitive version of the experience and can’t be missed.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition

Overall, Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition is easily the definitive version of the experience. The new additions, namely Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted, are each fantastic in their own right. It gives fans more to do in an already fantastic experience, filling in pieces of history that are genuinely interesting to learn about. Combat was already one of the best parts in the base game, and Most Wanted gives you plenty more fighting to do.

Players who already own the game can upgrade for $14.99, making it easy to recommend to anyone who enjoyed the core experience. Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition gives you one more reason to jump back into Ezo, and it’s a fantastic return to Atsu’s story.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition is out on PS5 on October 1, 2026. Existing owners can upgrade for $14.99 USD.
