Forbidden, toxic love is a genre of romance that’s hard to turn away from, and Firefly Wedding Episode 1 lays down the groundwork for what will be one doozy of a love story. Based on the original manga series by Oreco Tachibana, with animation by studio David Production, the premiere focuses on the plight of Satoko Kirigaya (Lynn) before it takes an incredibly drastic turn. It ends on a note of morbid curiosity as Satoko’s actions seal a fate she might not be ready for.
Firefly Wedding Episode 1 starts calmly, taking its time to establish Satoko’s perspective and the people in her life. Incredibly fragile with a heart condition, to the point where her family keeps her inside at all times, Satoko is struggling to contend with the idea of marriage. Her father, Jubei Kirigaya (Kazuhiro Yamaji), wants his eldest daughter to get married to gain access to medical procedures that might help her live a longer, healthier life. Satoko also feels she needs to marry to repay her father for taking care of her.
While her father clearly loves and cherishes her, others in her home don’t share those feelings. In our first introduction and interaction between Satoko and her half-sister, Miwako (Hika Tsukishiro), their dialogue quickly establishes the hidden resentment Miwako feels toward Satoko. Not just for attracting the attention of her crush, but for the love their father has for Satoko. While the animation on Miwako in this interaction is occasionally awkward, verging on uncanny, Hika Tsuhishiro’s vocal cadence delivers the passive aggression Miwako throws her sister’s way in spades.
Satoko is never fully safe in Firefly Wedding Episode 1, with threats in and outside her home.

Eventually, Satoko steps out of the home with her bodyguard Kotaro Ogawa (Kent Itō), where everything appears normal. That is until the young woman is kidnapped by a gang that has been hired to take her and kill her. From here, Firefly Wedding Episode 1 takes a huge tonal and visual shift. Instead of the bright colors and beautiful florals that make up her privileged yet narrow life, she is met with distorted darkness and bloodlust.
This intensifies once the male love interest, Shinpei Goto (Koki Uchiyama), enters the picture. Once given a task, this skilled assassin becomes hyper-fixated, with little room for deviation. This particular character trait extends eventually to how he first guards Satoko at all costs from being touched while reminding her he will kill her. That is, until she strikes a deal with him using the only thing at her disposal: her worth as a bride.
Her chastity and path to marriage are a sticking point in Firefly Wedding Episode 1. Set in the Meiji era and born to an affluent family, Satoko has incredibly limited options. Her purity is her value, and her family name only strengthens it. Forced to choose between immediate assault and death at the hands of men or life, she bargains with Shinpei, the only way she can, using the prospect of marriage in an attempt to convince him not to kill her. And for a time, it doesn’t seem like he’ll take her up on it.
Shinpei Goto makes for an unlikely love interest in Firefly Wedding Episode 1, and that’s why it weirdly works.

Escalation turns into some brutally fluid animation fight sequences in Firefly Wedding Episode 1, though the expressions rendered on both Shinpei’s and Satoko’s faces during these moments don’t always fit the situation. There’s also an uncanny feeling in how Shinpei’s face distorts, his eyes too wide apart at certain angles that are often distracting. Sure, you could argue this creates an inhuman quality that reflects his general lack of humanity, but that might be too much leniency.
For two lost souls who yearn to find someone who will accept them for their faults, however, the ending of Firefly Wedding Episode 1 strikes an ominous, yet potentially uplifting chord. A single act from Satoko completely shifts Shinpei’s perspective on her, and it’s a reminder of how honest and open Satoko has been from her initial moments in this opening episode. Is he already showing signs of obsession? Yes, and it’s his final words, brilliantly acted by Koki Uchiyama, that will ring warning bells.
As an opener, Firefly Wedding Episode 1 wastes no time establishing its core characters, especially Satoko as the series’ heroine. With a tragic future already awaiting her, the inciting incident propels her into a new realm of danger, one in which she finds herself now locked in with a deadly killer. It’s an exciting way to wrap the episode, generating enough interest in this would-be couple, with no clear idea whether Satoko will survive what she’s fallen into in the end.
Firefly Wedding Episode 1 premieres on Crunchyroll on October 9, 2026.
