REVIEW: ‘A Love Other Than Yours’ Episodes 1-2

A Love Other Than Yours (Neo malgo dareun yeonae), directed by Hwang Seung-Ki, explores the difficulties couples face when their love feels stagnant. Using comedy and melodrama, A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1-2 offer a glimpse of a series that promises to be something truly special.

Love is never straightforward. Relationships are messy and difficult, and after a long time in one place, they can even start to feel like a burden. Anyone who’s ever been in a long-term relationship knows what it’s like to be in a rut, and so do Namgung Ho and Lee Mi Do.

Namgung Ho (Seo Kang-joon) and Lee Mi Do (Ahn Eun-jin) have known each other since grade school. They were always friends — the best of friends even. Now in their mid-thirties, they’ve been dating for the last 10 years. Ho is working in the lab for a potato chip company, and Mi Do is a struggling filmmaker.

A Love Other Than Yours uses melodrama and comedy to craft something special.

At a dinner with Mi Do’s family, her mother (Kim Mi-kyung) tells the two point-blank that they need to decide right now if they’re going to get married or break up. Mi Do’s brothers, Lee Yeong Do (Kim Nam-Hee) and Lee Wan Do (Lee Min-Jae), express their frustration with their sister for never having stable work in the film industry. They believe her instability is a good reason for Ho to never marry her.

While Ho thrives at work, Mi Do’s professional life seems to be crumbling around her. After losing her job as the director of a major motion picture, she returns to directing adult films.

She loses self-confidence, and she begins to truly believe that she’ll never be good enough for Ho. Mi Do decides that there isn’t anything worth saving and breaks up with Ho on the same night that he had planned an extravagant proposal with the help of her brothers.

The stage is set. A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1 asks the question, “If their love was strong enough to last 10 years, is it strong enough to last even in a breakup?” The series uses a very silly brand of comedy to keep things feeling light and refreshing most of the time, but there are some very emotionally charged moments that are allowed to shine on their own.

Unfortunately, that comedy is not entirely consistent, sometimes appearing when it’s not necessary and other times being too over the top for the moment. The use of quirky sound effects and humorous music, not unlike the Nintendo Wii E-Shop theme at times, feels more fitting for kids than for a serious adult romance.

When the music and comedic sound effects get out of the way, the more emotional parts of A Love Other Than Yours Episodes 1 and 2 are spectacular. Sometimes, they’re sweet — like diabetic sweet. Other times, they’re painful. The use of flashbacks is especially helpful in seeing Ho and Mi Do in happier times, back when they were mostly smiling.

A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1- 2 show a love in a rut, but always tell the audience that our lead couple was happy once.

It’s a bit ironic that A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1-2 have such a slow-burn romance feel to it. This is a story about people who have practically known each other their entire lives. They even make a point of that in the second episode when the pair sit down to try winning a prize for being the best couple. Despite not having an elevated heart rate like all of the other couples, they knew each other far and away the best of anyone in the room.

This slow-burn romance has been building for approximately 30 years before audiences ever even meet Ho and Mi Do. A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1-2 make it clear that neither of them is okay following the breakup, which is fully understandable given the amount of time they spent together.

The casting for Ho and Mi Do is phenomenal. Seo Kang-joon as Ho is a perfect choice. Ho can sometimes be quite intense. Seo has really intense eyes and a very dry presence. It doesn’t come off as uncaring or even nonchalant, but rather as stoic.

Seo Kang-joon and Ahn Eun-jin are expertly cast in this Prime Video K-drama.

Alternatively, Mi Do is a carefree spirit. She’s always eating something, and nothing is ever clean or organized. Ahn Eun-jin embraces the wild within and is the perfect counterbalance to Seo’s Ho. Their chemistry is amazing in every scene. Whether they’re laughing, crying, kissing, or something more steamy, they seem like they’ve really been doing this for the last 10 years instead of merely playing that connection on TV.

There’s a lot of story left to tell, but A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1-2 have laid some incredible groundwork. Ho and Mi Do are certainly a couple that can’t be ignored. Over the next 7 weeks, it will be interesting to see if Ho and Mi Do stay apart or if they realize that they’re all each other needs.
