Sudden Attack Zero Point’s Director Kim Tae-hyun Discusses Bringing The Franchise Global In This Remaster

NEXON announced that Sudden Attack Zero Point is coming to Steam later this year. It is the remaster of their iconic tactical shooter, Sudden Attack, which debuted in South Korea in 2005. Now, in early access on PC,  Sudden Attack Zero Point is a free-to-play first-person shooter (FPS) that aims to deliver a fast-paced shooting experience.

When jumping into a match, NEXON says that players can expect to engage in diverse combat scenarios through a robust gun customization system and dominate classic bomb defusal missions and Team Death Match (TDM) using special tactics.

As a remaster, the game retains the franchise’s signature fast-paced combat and strategic gameplay rooted in classic bomb defusal and TDM, while delivering upgraded visuals enabled by its game engine upgrade. The game introduces a new weapon customization system that offers deeper personalization and expanded tactical options, and delivers fresh, intense action.

Ahead of the game’s Early Access launch on PC, we spoke with Sudden Attack Zero Point Director Kim Tae-hyun via email about NEXON’s lessons from previous free-to-play global launches, what veteran players to the series will be excited for, and how the team plans to meet brand new audiences too.

This interview for Sudden Attack Zero Point was conducted via email and edited for clarity.

BUT WHY THO: What was the most rewarding part of remastering Sudden Attack?

The most rewarding moments were when longtime Sudden Attack players saw the remastered classic maps and gameplay feel and welcomed “that old feeling.”

At the same time, confirming in testing that global newcomers encountering Sudden Attack for the first time could quickly and comfortably have fun was a great achievement. The very process of achieving both at once—preserving memories and welcoming a new generation—was rewarding in itself.

BUT WHY THO: What was the most challenging thing when it came to handling a remaster for a new generation?

The hardest part was finding a balance point that preserves the “original-ness” longtime fans remember while also meeting the expectations of new players accustomed to modern FPS games.

For example, we had to revive classic maps with the latest graphics while keeping the battlefield structure and engagement rhythm true to the original’s feel, and blend in new systems like customization and the Black Market without harming the existing gameplay. We’ve tuned this balance through repeated testing and community feedback.

BUT WHY THO: It’s been 21 years since Sudden Attack started as a franchise; what have been the core elements that Sudden Attack Zero Point needed to keep, and where did the team innovate to meet 2026 expectations of the genre?

The core elements we wanted to preserve are the ones mentioned earlier: easy accessibility, fast and dense close-quarters engagements, and traditional team tactics. Our innovation efforts centered on those three axes.

First, a visual remaster with the latest graphics. Second, personalized combat styles through weapon customization. Third, a player-to-player economic cycle based on the Black Market. We kept the identity of the traditional Bomb Defusal mode intact while combining it with the customization, progression, and economy elements that modern FPS players expect.

BUT WHY THO: Free-to-Play models look different across different regions with different priorities. What have other Nexon free-to-play releases taught the team about approaching global audiences with Sudden Attack Zero Point?

Nexon has long serviced F2P titles for global players, and we understand that preferred models differ from region to region. Building on this experience, Sudden Attack Zero Point aims to provide a fair-play experience so we can offer a game service that all global players can enjoy.

BUT WHY THO: One of the elements that keeps people away from shooter titles, especially those with competitive objective-based play, is the large skill gap between those with more time to play and those who can only pick up a game casually. What is the balancing approach to creating an approachable title while still offering challenge for players who seek it?

A low entry point that lets anyone start easily is one of Sudden Attack’s greatest strengths. With its quick, fast-paced game tempo, intuitive controls, and compact maps, casual players can quickly get comfortable and have fun, while weapon customization and tactical team play are designed to reveal their depth the more you dig in. In other words, “easy to enter, high skill ceiling” is our approach to balance.

BUT WHY THO:  Sudden Attack Zero Point may be people’s first time being introduced to the Sudden Attack game. How does it feel to introduce the game to new audiences? What do you hope they take away?

We feel excited and at the same time, responsible. For people who knew nothing about Sudden Attack to encounter it for the first time through Sudden Attack Zero Point is both a great opportunity and puts a lot of pressure on us. We hope they enjoy the simple and fast combat tempo, and the joy of completing their own weapon.

BUT WHY THO: What was it about the Sudden Attack series that made it the right choice to remaster?

Having run for over 20 years, Sudden Attack is a special game to everyone on the development team. And when we asked ourselves what game we make best, we concluded there was nothing but Sudden Attack.

In terms of gameplay too, we judged that its strengths—easy-to-learn controls, fast tempo, dense physical-focused engagements, and tactics-centered play—still hold up well in today’s market.

BUT WHY THO: While North American audiences may not know the game’s history, as of 2020, Sudden Attack boasted 23 million players. That in and of itself is a huge accomplishment for any title. How does Sudden Attack Zero Point plan to honor the players who have been with the original’s side since 2014 while still moving forward to reach new audiences?

Twenty years of history and cumulative tens of millions of players are Sudden Attack’s great assets. For existing players, we’ve revived not only the iconic maps and characters but also Sudden Attack’s signature fast combat feel with the latest technology, recreating “the fun of those days.”

For new players, we’ve prepared a low barrier to entry with short, fast matches and wait times, intuitive controls, and more. Building on this, we’ve equipped modern elements like weapon customization and the Black Market to prepare content all players can enjoy.

BUT WHY THO:  Before players jump in, what is the most important piece of advice you would give them to help them find their play style in Sudden Attack Zero Point?

Don’t feel pressured—just start by freely trying out various weapon and part combinations. The process of “completing your own weapon customized to your play style” is one of the great fun elements of Sudden Attack Zero Point. As you experience combinations of various weapons and parts, we hope you naturally discover your play style as well as the fun of completing a weapon that’s uniquely yours.

Sudden Attack Zero Point is in Early Access on PC now, with no current release window for its 1.0 launch.
