REVIEW: ‘Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok’ Makes A Good Game Great

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, the new expanded edition of Cygames’ action RPG, is everything an expansion should be. It adds a ton of new content, including more story, higher difficulties, new characters, a new rogue-lite mode, and even more, but it’s not just more new. It also reworks the base game, balancing characters better and adding full crossplay across all systems.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok takes what was already a good game and makes it great, with the new master traits and summons being fantastic additions that make the combat even more fun. It is very much a test, pushing players to embrace both old systems and new to take on the most difficult fights yet.

We liked the base game back in 2024, giving it a 7 and saying: “Overall, although not without faults, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a highly enjoyable entry that series fans will undoubtedly fall in love with. The game offers a captivating albeit simple narrative, mesmerizing visuals, and a fun gameplay experience. If you’re a JRPG fan looking for a great new experience, then you’ll do no wrong with Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Just don’t expect anything out of the ordinary.”

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok successfully builds on the foundation of the base game.

Still from Granblue Fantasy: Relink - Endless Ragnarok

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok follows the crew of the Grandcypher, including the Captain, Lyria, Kataline, and a host of other colorful personalities, as they deal with new issues in a brand-new epilogue. The base game chronicles battles against the Church of Avia, while the new epilogue focuses on mutated monsters popping up around the world. It’s up to the gang to stop threats, take down monsters, and discover the truth at the heart of it all.

Narrative takes a back seat in Endless Ragnarok, with a lot of the story being told in quick, static cutscenes and text. There is definitely a story here, and it’s largely fine, centered around the true origins of the Conflux, the new rogue-lite area, and the forces operating in the shadows. It’s by no means the focus, though. Instead, Endless Ragnarok is firmly aimed at those looking to test their mettle in huge fights.

Just as in the base game, the best part of Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok remains the combat. The action is fast and frenetic, with plenty of phases and flashy moves. Each character plays entirely differently, with the six new additional characters being welcome new additions. Eustace blasts enemies away with a gun that powers up over time, carefully reloading and taking shots to blast through enemies.

While the story takes a backseat, the combat reigns supreme.

Fediel in Granblue Fantasy: Relink - Endless Ragnarok

Fediel is a personal favorite, teleporting around the combat arena and blasting enemies with dark magic and huge claw strikes. She’s a powerhouse that offers a good mix of melee attacks and ranged options, with her combat kit changing as you work in new combos and pop off attacks. The rest of the new characters are similarly cool and offer new ways to play. They’ve been integrated into the base game as well, unlockable at different points, so even those replaying from the start will have new ways to engage with it.

Endless Ragnarok very much continues the spirit of the base game’s epilogue. Every fight here is a challenge and a struggle—one that will push you into a corner and make you get back out. Those looking for a more narrative-focused expansion should look elsewhere. The tough-as-nails fights are the biggest and best-selling point of the package. Every new bit of story is behind an even harder fight or combat gauntlet. Endless Ragnarok will make you work for more lore.

The Conflux is another huge new addition woven throughout the main and post-games. It’s a newly added roguelite mode that packs tons of rewards for those willing to brave the challenge. There are multiple levels to it, getting increasingly difficult and varied as new Cycles unlock. It’s a lot of fun, mixing in different rooms that offer various challenges, from platforming and puzzles to combat arenas. Make it to the end, and you’re rewarded with upgrade materials and other boons, giving your crew more options for enhancement.

The addition of the Conflux is a lot of fun and gives players a variety of different challenges.

It nails the roguelite experience, constantly changing things up so you don’t have to grind as much as before to upgrade your characters and gear. As you fight through, you get new bonuses for that run that can increase attack or other stats, with an overall meta-progression that makes your characters stronger than before. It’s fast and furious, never keeping you in one place for too long while making each new run worth it.

The biggest combat changes are the summon mechanics and master traits. Summons were cinematic moments in the base game, but sparse and few, while Endless Ragnarok turns them into a mechanic. Now, a summon gauge fills up as you fight, and when it’s full, you can summon a huge creature that you control. It’s not just a cinematic attack; it puts you behind the claws and lasers of legendary titans that crush through foes. There are tons of options, making build craft even deeper than before. It’s not just your party; now you have summons to slot into to balance out holes in your offense and defense.

The summons are a riot to use, especially in the lengthy boss battles the series is known for. Some of these fights can last upwards of 20 minutes, and the summons help break up the flow, offering targets to shoot for throughout the fight. It nails the power fantasy of controlling these huge creatures and is a blast every time the bar fills. From a giant ice beast that rocks enemies and freezes them on the way out, to a centaur that slices through using wind gusts, finding the right balance of summons is necessary to get through the grueling encounters.

The summons allows players to break the flow, making a huge difference in the longer battles.

Master Traits further deepen and build variety, as you can now spec characters in different ways to make them even more effective. Each character has their own master traits that can be ranked up. Where one trait can make a character stronger, another may increase their healing.

For example, Gran, aka the Captain, has master traits that can make their artes stronger and lessen cooldowns, while another makes them a more competitive healer to help keep the party alive. Io, on the other hand, has three master traits: one boosts her attack and damage output, another shortens cooldowns, and the last modifies her Stargaze abilities.

There are tons of characters, especially with the newly added group, meaning you can spend hours just picking and customizing your crew. It adds more variety to an already beefy endgame that can materially change how a character plays, making some you may have shrugged off more valuable than before.

With a variety of characters, players can craft a crew to their liking and then some.

Primal burst in in Granblue Fantasy: Relink - Endless Ragnarok

You’ll need to know your party inside and out to go up against the higher difficulty monsters and quests, with the newly added difficulty modes and quests truly pushing you to the brink. While some of these fights can still take too long, you’ll be white-knuckling the controller the entire time trying to stay alive.

It’s also a solid experience on Steam Deck. Playing on lower settings keeps the experience at a relatively stable 30 fps, occasionally jumping slightly higher or lower. I played the entire experience on Deck with few hiccups, and it still looked beautiful on the smaller screen.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok takes a good game and makes it even better. The reworked and expanded cast are a ton of fun to use, the story is a blast, and the summons and master traits truly change up combat and party composition. The already excellent combat has been made even deeper and more satisfying, with each fight being a whirlwind of attacks and explosions. Those who slept on Granblue Fantasy: Relink the first time around shouldn’t miss Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, easily one of the year’s best RPGs so far.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is out on July 9, 2026, on PS5, PS4, Switch 2, and Steam.
