Zelda Williams makes her feature film debut with Lisa Frankestein. This undead romance romp hits theaters on February 9th, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Diablo Cody‘s last film was her 2018 Tully and Lisa Frankenstein already is able to demonstrate her affinity for quippy one-liners. More than any of her recent work, the trailer recalls her formidable cult-classic Jennifer’s Body, especially as it leans into female rage and agency themes. Williams, best known for her voice work in Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra, has found a perfect match for her visuals.

The film is reminiscent of another beyond-the-grave romance, Warm Bodies, but with a neon, vibrant edge. With clear influences of ’80s and ’90s genre films and a substantial needle drop, Lisa Frankestein delivers a solid initial impression. Sometimes we need our movies about romance to be peppered with a bit of horror too.

What is Lisa Frankenstein About?

In 1989, a misunderstood teenage goth girl named Lisa Swallows reanimates a handsome corpse from the Victorian era during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams by using a broken tanning machine in her garage. After going through a playfully horrific transformation, the romantic duo embark on a murderous journey to find true love, happiness, and a few missing body parts along the way. Lisa Frankenstein is a coming of RAGE story from Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body.)
