REVIEW: ‘Kaiju Girl Caramelise’ Episode 3 — “A Sparkling Weekend ~Where Dreams Come True~”

In Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3, the series takes aim at one of life’s greatest joys. Continuing on in the slow-burn romance between Akaishi (Hikari Senga) and Minami (Daishi Kajita), Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3, “A Sparkling Weekend ~Where Dreams Come True~” shows the growing attraction between both main characters. While not as well executed as the episodes that preceded it, this episode does a lot of work to move the story forward.

Following the “attack” on the school, Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3 opens with Harugon leaving town again. Manatsu begs for the giant kaiju to come back as first responders deal with the fallout on campus. Once Akaishi is alone, she quickly makes her way back to the school so that it doesn’t appear that she’s missing. At this point, Minami asks her to go on a more proper date.

Minami takes Akaishi on a date to a theme park. This theme park likes to remind people at every turn that it’s the place “where dreams come true.” It’s an obvious riff on Disney parks, complete with an enchanting castle and a giant mouse named Michey. The theme park has a lot of rides for couples, and Minami is eager to get Akaishi alone on one of them.

A theme park trip makes for a hormonal “kaiju” triggering nightmare for Akaishi.

Akaishi is very hesitant to be in any situation where her hormones may trigger a kaiju appearance and opts out of any romantic rides or even rides that put the two of them together. After a full day of feeling pushed away, Minami believes that Akaishi is simply not into him and promises to leave her alone.

Quite the opposite is true, and in fact, Akaishi is more enamored than ever. Between the feeling that she is disappointing Minami and the idea that he wouldn’t talk to her, the kaiju hormones begin changing her. While avoiding a full transformation, she sprouts a tail and kaiju hands as well as some back scales. Upon realizing that the transformation has started, she runs off, and Minami believes he was right to assume she wasn’t really interested.

Moments later, the transformation has taken form too quickly, and people begin to notice. Akaishi is sure that she’s going to have to explain her form to Minami, but when he spots her, he believes that it’s just a very good cosplay. He also shows Akaishi a picture she dropped when she ran off, which shows the two of them together.

The path for Akaishi to feel secure with Minami is frustrating, but the payoff makes it worthwhile.

Realizing that she hadn’t intended to come off as distant, his affection returns in full force. Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3 ends with a half-transformed Akaishi realizing that she’s safe and allowing herself an evening of fun and actually giving herself permission to feel.

Overall, Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3 is fairly successful. Instead of relying on a giant kaiju to carry the audience’s interest, the series allows both characters the room to breathe and get to know each other better. Kaiju Girl Caramelise uses both characters’ internal dialogue to communicate normal high school-aged thoughts and feelings of inadequacy and fears of rejection.

Where Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3 falters is that even after finding the courage to show Minami her kaiju tail in Episode 2, she takes a giant step backward here by retreating into the familiar territory of not being willing to trust Minami with more than a surface-level knowledge of who she is. While it’s not unusual that a teenage girl would shrink back into her anxieties and body-image issues after a brief period of trust, the way Akaishi reacts to even the slightest affection from Minami is exhausting.

To top it off, in the previous episode, Akaishi opted to keep her secret to herself. It wasn’t surprising, but the decision to keep Minami in the dark longer is felt throughout Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3. While Minami begs for Akaishi to be closer and uses every tool in his arsenal to be more endearing, Akaishi spends the majority of the episode pushing him away. It comes as a surprise to absolutely no one that he felt rejected and that Akaishi wasn’t into him by the time he finally decided he’d had enough.

Even still, Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3 shows a great example of how sometimes a person can be their own worst enemy. The series does a fantastic job in pushing Akaishi and Minami closer together without it feeling forced or unearned. At times, the burn does linger longer than necessary.

While Kaiju Girl Caramelise Episode 3 seems to be delaying the inevitable reveal, it reinforces that the greatest obstacle in Akaishi’s life isn’t becoming a giant monster—it’s learning to believe that someone could genuinely accept her for who she is. Episode 3 continues to perfectly show the angst of a teenage girl who still hasn’t quite learned that she’s worthy of other people’s care and affection. As a result, the series’s greatest strength is those moments when she lets go and simply chooses to live life.
