Prime Video announced it has ordered a docuseries about the notorious Gilgo Beach serial killer, who was captured this year, titled Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders. The new docuseries is produced by Nacelle Company, with Empress Films serving as the production company, and director Emma Cooper shaping the series for Prime Video.

“Working on this story has been a profound privilege,” said Director Emma Cooper in a release to press. “To sit with the families, to hear their voices, and to witness the tireless commitment of law enforcement has offered an insight that is as heartbreaking as it is vital. Ultimately, this is their story, and I am deeply grateful to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust and support in allowing me to tell it with honesty and care.

Cooper’s comment puts the current conversation about True Crime as a genre and entertainment into perspective. With exploitive series like Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology, which most recently released Monster: The Ed Gein Story, there has been much anger from audiences calling out the series’ inaccuracies and exploitation of victims, the question of how to cover real-life atrocities as entertainment or if we should has resurfaced.

While some series like Peacock’s Devil In Disguise: The John Wayne Gacy have put empathy first, True Crime audiences have a higher standard. With docuseries, walking the line between informing and providing entertainment is key.

And at least as far as comments are concerned, Lauren Anderson, Head of Brand and Content Innovation, Amazon MGM Studios, made it a point to focus on the victims. “Sharing the powerful stories of the victims’ families has been both humbling and profoundly moving for everyone involved,” she said in the same press release.

“We feel incredibly fortunate to partner with our talented director, Emma Cooper, and her outstanding team at Empress Films for helping us bring this exceptional docuseries to Prime Video audiences around the world. We’re also deeply grateful to our colleagues at The Nacelle Company for their collaboration.”

What is the docuseries, Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders, about?

The Prime Video docuseries wouldn’t be the only True Crime title about the killings, one of which was Netflix’s Gone Girl: The Long Island Serial Killer. The official synopsis for Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders from Prime Video is listed below:

From 1996 to 2011, Gilgo Beach, New York, became the haunting site where 11 bodies were discovered, their deaths shrouded in mystery with no suspects identified. This chilling series unravels one of the most notorious unsolved crimes of our era, now taking a turn as a major suspect heads to trial.

With unprecedented access, the inside story delves into the depths of this horrific case, exploring the mind of an individual capable of the unthinkable, while unveiling the systemic failures that allowed him to slip through the cracks. With new exclusive insights and compelling questions, this series ultimately serves as a testament to give voice to the voiceless in a case that has confounded investigators and finally aims to provide long-awaited answers to a true mystery of our time.

Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders will release exclusively on Prime Video at a future date.
