Assassin’s Creed Assassins Who Deserve AComeback Next

Assassin's Creed Characters who deserve a comeback next - But Why Tho

With Assassin’s Creed Mirage officially on the horizon for 2023 and the revelation that its main character will be none other than Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Basim, it’s fair to wonder what other Assassin’s Creed characters from previous games in the franchise might get new life in future titles. With over a dozen games, there are a lot of great Assassins and Hidden Ones to choose from who haven’t quite gotten their full due yet.

Some assassins we saw throughout much of their lives over several games. Others got hundreds of hours of content across multiple DLC while others only graced our screens for a short time, never to be seen from again. These five Assassins and Hidden Ones are among those who deserve a comeback next.

Adéwalé

Adawale - But Why Tho

We first have the fortune of meeting Adéwalé in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag where he serves as Edward Kenway, the main character of the game’s First Mate. He becomes a playable character though in the game’s DLC, Freedom Cry where his life as an Assassin in his own right is expanded upon. And while we do get to see him again toward the end of his life in Assassin’s Creed Rogue, there are decades of his adventures leading the Assassins of the Caribbean that we never get to see. Black Flag is a fan favorite for its swashbuckling seafaring and there is no better time than the current generation to return to this locale for a new adventure with an old friend.

Amunet/Aya

Amunet - But Why Tho

As the first game in a new era of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed Origins doesn’t always get its due as an emotionally gripping and heavily character-driven entry in the franchise. And while we’ve gotten a pretty rounded representation of its main character Bayek’s life, his wife Aya remains the truly interesting character we have yet to explore nearly enough.

While Bayek is off living his Medjay life, it’s really Aya who is most instrumental in forming what would become the Hidden Ones and eventually, a millennia later, the Assassins. The brief time we get to play as her in Origins is a highlight that made her into one of my favorite Assassin’s Creed characters. Any chance to return to the ancient world to take part in the formation of the Hidden Ones during her days as Amunet would be a treat.

Arno Dorian

Assassin's Creed characters - Arno Dorian - But Why Tho

I’m probably one of the few people who actually liked Assassin’s Creed Unity upon its initial release. But now that more folks have started coming around on this early last-gen title, I think it’s time to see its main character Arno Dorian again. While the game itself is totally conclusive, and we even get to see some connections to his life story in Rogue, what I’m most intrigued by is what happens to Arno after the French Revolution. Not only because the game never delves into the reign of Napolean Bonaparte and how Arno may have felt when his friend became himself what he fought gainst much like Robespierre did in the game. But also becasue as the DLC Dead Kings showed us, Arno had a knack for discovering Pieces of Eden. I’d love to see Arno return as a relic hunter whose sense of right and wrong is confronted in every new realm he enters.

Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad - But Why Tho

Of course, the Assassin who started it all is and always has been among fan favorites. But Assassin’s Creed remains the singular title in the franchise not availalbe to play on either the current or previous console generations. While he does play a role in the lore of some later games, we never truly get to experience Altaïr as a grandmaster. It would be thrilling to see him at his peak of power and capability overseeing the reformation and rebuilding of the Assassins afteer his own master betrayed the order in the original game.

Shao Jun

Shao Jun - But Why Tho

I’m probably the biggest fan of the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles games I know. I can’t help that they’re just a lot of fun to me and that I find their centuries-long story quite interesting. Most interesting is the fact that this under-appreciated Assassin is trained by none other than Ezio himself when she becomes the last of her bureau. While multiple other media have covered Shao Jun’s story, including an ongoing Chinese novel trilogy that non-canonically expands on her story beyond just that of the video game, her story is one of the best in the franchise and more players deserve to know her.
