Obsidian shared the first deep dive into the gameplay experience fans can expect in Avowed along with gameplay footage.The upcoming fantasy action RPG takes place in the fantastical world of Living Lands. The presentation by Obsidian at the Xbox Developer Direct also shared their expertise in worldbuilding. From the deep themes explored to dynamic gameplay and thoughtful reactivity, players are able to have agency to make choices to shape each of their adventures. They developers seek to blend the fantastical with the believable.
They spoke too about the range of attacks and combat for players. It won’t simply be “hacking and slashing” and players will making decisions in real time in how to utilize attacks, weapons and melees. They note that players will be given customizable loadouts that can be swapped out during battle. Combat will be customizable, featuring melee, ranged, and magical attacks. The gameplay shows the versatility of combat opportunities from short range to long range attacks.

It’s not just about the combat though. There’s a strong narrative focus too with players forced to make decisions with profound consequences. They note that they seek to “embrace moral nuance and gray areas” and trust players to make thorough decisions in complicated situations. The consequences of these decisions play out past the initial decisions. The third quest in particular will prove challenging for players as they’re dealt with a difficult choice regarding a potential deserter.
Art Director Matt Hansen sought for a unique and colorful art style. They wanted to contrast the vibrant with the dull to deliver complex emotional experiences. The presentation included looks at new, storied landscapes to showcase the expansive worldbuilding.
