What do a cult, a supposedly revolutionary trauma drug, and the death of a young man have to do with each other? Neagley, a former military police officer, now a private investigator and Jack Reacher’s closest friend, is on the case and will get to the bottom of this dark conspiracy. Neagley, the spin-off to Nick Santora’s massive hit Amazon Prime Video series, Reacher, centers on the predecessor series’s most intriguing and breakout character, Frances Neagley.

Neagley is based on the characters created by Lee Child, and the series was created for television by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wooton. Santora and Wooton also serve as writers along with Adam Higgs, Lacey Herbert, and Kyle Long. Neagley Season 1 is directed by Phil Abraham, MJ Bassett, Gary Fleder, and Sam Hill.

The series main cast features Maria Sten as Frances Neagley, Greyston Holt as Hudson Riley, Jasper Jones as Keno, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow, Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole, Rebecca Liddiard as Judith Gray, and Tyrone Benskin as Calvin Neagley.

Neagley Season 1 builds on Reacher’s success but tells its own story.

Neagley Season 1 centers on the sudden, unfortunate death of Frances Neagley’s closest childhood friend, Tommy. While the local authorities are quick to label Tommy’s death as a suicide or a tragic accident, Neagley refuses to accept that there was something deeper to her friend’s death. Little does Neagley know that Tommy’s death is just the tip of the iceberg, leading her to unravel a deeper mystery and also find answers to her own trauma.

Maria Sten’s performance as the titular character is one of the show’s greatest strengths. As a supporting character in the Reacher series, Neagley was instantly a fan favorite for her intense loyalty, keen attention to detail, highly capable skill set, and unshakeable confidence. The spin-off series truly allows Neagley to shine on her own, and Sten’s performance in the role carries the show in the best way as it delves more intimately into her character.

Because of Neagley’s personal connection to the season’s central mystery, the season carries greater emotional weight. Neagley is not simply working a case for a client; she is on a mission to uncover the truth behind what happened to her friend. Neagley’s dedication to uncovering the truth not only leads her to get answers for Tommy’s family, but also uncovers the root cause of her own trauma, such as her Haphephobia (intense fear of being touched).

Neagley Season 1 brings us deeper into a character we know little about outside of her work with Jack Reacher.

Since her introduction to the Reacher series, it’s been established that Neagley has intense discomfort with being touched by others. Her friends, like Reacher, never really questioned the reason behind her haphephobia; they just accepted Neagley for who she is.

The series benefits from exploring Neagley’s trauma in greater depth rather than merely leaving it as part of her backstory. The show dedicates time and effort to exploring Neagley’s condition and how it has affected her life over the years, while also acknowledging that her fear cannot be suddenly overcome simply because she understands the reasons behind it. The show that Neagley wants to change to overcome her fears. Neagley’s growth reminds us that trauma can deeply affect a person, but it doesn’t mean they have to stop pursuing positive change.

Neagley Season 1 most compelling moments come from Neagley confronting her past, which involves much of the complicated relationship with her father and coming to terms with his impending death. Sten and Tyron Benskin, who portray her father, truly capture the chemistry and intense emotions of their father-daughter dynamic. The moments between Neagley and her father provide further insight into her character and the story as a whole.

The main mystery at the root of Neagley Season 1 explores the exploitation of vulnerable people who struggle with addiction, homelessness, instability, and their own traumas. The conspiracy centers on these individuals being used as essentially disposable test subjects in the development of a new trauma drug.

It adds an unsettling but raw dimension to the story, particularly because the people being exploited are treated like disposable lab rats, since they don’t have family or someone looking for them. Although Neagley remains primarily an action-driven mystery, this storyline gives the series something substantial to say about addiction, vulnerability, and the lengths to which powerful people will go for greed.

Neagley Season 1 follows a similar storytelling formula to that of its original series, Reacher. Much like Reacher, Neagley suddenly finds herself connected to a mystery that hits close to home or has a personal connection for her, and soon finds herself unraveling something much deeper. While the show’s storytelling formula is not new, it honestly works well for Neagley and results in a series that feels familiar yet still tells a refreshing story.

Prime Video doesn’t change up the storytelling formula with Neagley Season 1.

Neagley doesn’t need to reinvent the franchise just because it is a spin-off. As a series, Neagley builds on the foundation Reacher established in the previous series while developing the show’s own distinct identity.

The series blends high-action scenes, clever investigation tactics, and an intriguing mystery that plays to her personal strengths, such as her attention to the littlest details and ability to connect clues that seem unrelated. Watching Neagley work a case as the main character isn’t simply about putting a female version of Reacher at the center of the story; the show also makes an effort to make the investigation and story feel like her own.

Pacing-wise, the 8-episode season works great for Neagley. Whether this is a one-and-done season or the beginning of a bigger story, the show is a success. The first season tells a compelling story that deepens Neagley as the main character while also introducing a strong supporting cast that brings natural chemistry to the show. By the end of the season, Neagley and the show have room to grow and to solve more cases.

Speaking of chemistry, Neagley is not all about action and mystery; there is a sprinkle of romance in this season between Detective Riley and Neagley. As the season progresses, Riley and Neagley start off a bit rocky but gradually develop into something genuine and more. While the season does not have the hot-and-heavy sex scenes like its predecessor, it honestly does not need them.

Neagley’s undergoing a level of growth and change she never considered before, and it takes time. Having her character instantly jump into bed, let alone kiss someone, would be such a deep departure for her.

So while some viewers may be eagerly rooting for the pair to share a physical moment this season, they will just have to be patient. While the characters’ feelings are mutual, it is more important that the series stay true to Neagley and not force something that is completely out of character for her. Hopefully, if there is a second season, Neagley and Riley’s relationship can progress further and explore how they navigate their physical boundaries together.

Neagley Season 1 is an absolute success. The first season proves Frances Neagley can carry a show on her own and is more than just Reacher’s protégé and friend. The show further expands on its predecessor’s universe and Neagley’s own lore, making a strong case for a second season to explore the characters in greater depth.

While the show doesn’t deviate much from the Reacher storytelling process, which works well for it, the story still carves out its own unique identity. Neagley Season 1 has great pacing, intense performances, and thematic exploration of addiction and trauma, making it more than worth a watch.

Neagley Season 1 is streaming now, exclusively on Prime Video.
