REVIEW: ‘Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation’ Season 3 Episode 14 — “Resolve”

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 14, “Resolve,” sees the emotional toll of learning what might’ve been hit Rudeus  (Yumi Uchiyama, Star Wars: Visions) as he strives to prevent the worst of his possible future. But another meeting with the Man-God (Kujira, The Ghost in the Shell) sets the protagonist on a new, deadly path to secure peace for his family and his descendants. 

Opening just as Rudeus completes the reading of his future self’s diary, the emotional acceptance of what might’ve been hits him hard. We see it drive Rudeus to appreciate the various members of his family as he looks at them with more care than ever before. But he also remains haunted by the potential of losing them all. 

The way Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 14 depicts its lead in his moments of panic and fear drives home his agony well. The dread that he will be alone, bereft of the joy he has found in his second life, is striking in its presentation here. These moments of seemingly inexplicable terror don’t go unnoticed by those around him who still don’t know what has transpired. 

Rudeus reaches new levels of acceptance in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 14.

Rudeus eventually has a sit-down with his wives to touch on what he is going through. Despite not being willing to tell them the whole truth, he catches them up enough so they can understand the broad strokes of the worries that plague him.

The moments between Roxy (Konomi Kohara, Witch Watch), Sylphie (Ai Kayano, Platinum End), and Rudues are handled well. The women aren’t willing to accept what their husband says at face value, but they give him leeway to do what he needs, with the understanding that, when all is said and done, they may have to revisit his actions. 

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 14 disrupts Rudeus’ preparations to prevent future sorrows with a visit from the Man-God. The divine visitor comes clean about his plan and lays out why he set out to trick Rudeus in the first place. The conversation doesn’t go as one would expect. 

A meeting with the Man-God raises many questions.

An unbelievable abundance of acceptance and trust marks this interaction. Despite knowing that practically all of the Man-God’s actions towards Rudeus were set up to get him to trust him enough to trick him with his last request, Rudeus once again accepts everything the deity says at face value, even agreeing to a deadly challenge with the belief that accomplishing it will turn the Man-God’s attention away from his family. 

There are so many other explanations, though, for why Rudeus would be sent on this quest that are never brought up. Perhaps the Man-God simply wants Rudeus out of the way, so something terrible could befall his family in his absence? That this could be another trick never comes up, and it seems incredulous that it isn’t addressed. One would expect Rudeus’ guard to be so reinforced that if he was told the sky is blue, he’d wonder what the trick was. 

The final element of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 14 sees a letter arrive at the training school Eris (Ai Kakuma, Arknights: Rise from Embers) has called home. Just as she and Ghislaine (Megumi Toyoguchi, Marriagetoxin) prepare to depart, a letter Rudeus penned for her earlier in the episode appears. In it, he explains many of his feelings and his current situation with his other wives, and lets her know about his upcoming battle. 

Eris’s mission is successfully set up for the following Cour, with the emotional stakes high.

Eris’ response to the many revelations contained within the letter is impressively executed. Her reactions feel fair, and she even manages to come to grips, with some help from others, with how Rudeus might’ve seen her disappearance. And knowing that her love is facing deadly peril, she swiftly decides to intercept him, which feels like the probable reason it was mentioned.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 14 does a good job of wrapping up recent events while also setting up the narrative for the next cour. Despite a couple of interactions playing out a bit too smoothly, most of what transpires here showcases a fitting execution for what the episode does.
