REVIEW: ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Episode 2 — “Curiouser And Curiouser!”

Launching AFC Richmond’s women’s team was always going to require more than hiring Ted Lasso and putting new names on the back of familiar jerseys. AFC Richmond believes in women’s football. Unfortunately, belief does not provide a locker room, reliable Wi-Fi, or any of the other resources required to make a football club function. Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2, “Curiouser and Curiouser!” confronts the difference between supporting women’s football as an idea and investing in the women expected to build it.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 wastes little time exposing the distance between Richmond’s enthusiasm for the Lady Greyhounds and its willingness to invest in them. Hiring Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) and announcing the team were the easy parts. Now, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) has to confront what supporting the team will actually cost.

The best addition of Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 is Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds), the Lady Greyhounds’ assistant coach. Alice knows the players, understands the league, and has every reason to believe she should have been considered for the head coaching position. Instead, Rebecca admits that she never considered any women for the job because her entire plan revolved around bringing Ted back.

Their conversation remains perfectly professional on the surface. Alice never calls Rebecca anti-woman or questions her commitment to the team. Rebecca still walks away convinced that she has been accused of both, sending her into a spiral over what Alice must think of her. The comedy works because Rebecca recognizes the criticism Alice is too restrained to say aloud.

Alice Chilton is the best discovery in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2.

Rebecca is willing to risk Richmond’s future to create opportunities for women, yet she never considered giving the most important job on the team to one. She chose the man she already trusted without questioning whether the Lady Greyhounds needed someone who understood their circumstances more directly.

Ted recognizes that gap almost immediately. He wants a woman beside him on the coaching staff and makes a genuine effort to reach Alice. His warmth cannot immediately erase her tough exterior, though. Ted arrived with the reputation, authority, and position Alice may have reasonably believed she had earned. He is the face of the project before he has learned the names, needs, or realities of the players expected to carry it.

Alice is also clearly a great coach. She understands the Lady Greyhounds and brings an authority that has nothing to do with Ted’s approval. There are moments when she appears better equipped to lead this particular team than he is. That does not make Ted useless, but it changes what the series can ask of him.

Ted’s return could have placed him immediately back at the center of AFC Richmond, repeating the familiar formula with a new group of players. “Curiouser and Curiouser!” begins moving him to the side instead. He is still important, but Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 leaves space for Alice and the Lady Greyhounds to establish themselves without making every breakthrough another example of Ted’s brilliance.

Ted Lasso may be back but instead of taking centerstage, he’s being moved to the side instead.

That change may be exactly what Season 4 needs. The men became characters audiences loved because the series gave them room to exist beyond Ted’s influence. The Lady Greyhounds deserve the same opportunity. Ted can help build that ensemble without becoming its most important member.

Coach Beard’s (Brendan Hunt) strange behavior around Ted’s return reinforces how much has changed during the two years they spent apart. Their bromance cannot simply resume as if Ted stepped out of the room for a few minutes. Richmond continued without him. Beard continued without him. Whatever discomfort sits between them suggests that coming home will require Ted to rebuild old relationships alongside forming new ones.

The Lady Greyhounds’ facilities make Richmond’s larger problem impossible to ignore. Ted reaches their makeshift locker room by walking past the words and history celebrating the men who came before them. Every wall reinforces the legacy of Richmond’s men’s team. The women, meanwhile, have been placed in a cramped basement space that feels closer to storage than something meant for professional athletes. They do not even have access to the club’s Wi-Fi.

Alice still finds a way to give their corner of Richmond an identity. The small office across from the locker room is covered in sticky notes featuring quotes from women such as Virginia Woolf and Billie Jean King. Where the men have their history permanently displayed throughout the facility, Alice has assembled one for the Lady Greyhounds herself, one piece of paper at a time. Her approach to belief is grounded in the words and experiences of women who fought to be heard, giving her players something more substantial than another slogan on the wall.

The difference between the facilities for the women’s team and men’s team is easily demonstrated.

Keeley (Juno Temple) is the one who pushes Richmond to give the Lady Greyhounds the visitors’ locker room. That should represent progress. Instead, it reveals another layer of the problem. Richmond intentionally kept the room miserable to make opposing teams uncomfortable, so the women move from a basement storage space into a larger space that was still designed to make its occupants feel unwelcome. Even Richmond’s upgrade comes from something the men had already decided was not good enough for themselves.

The contrast is one of Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2’s strongest visual arguments. The men inherit a facility filled with their history. The women have to build their own around the evidence that they were an afterthought.

Ted sees how unacceptable the situation is, but Rebecca initially refuses to spend the money required to renovate the room. Her hesitation does not come from a lack of care. The financial risk surrounding the Lady Greyhounds is real. If the team fails, the losses could damage the men’s team and threaten the stability of the entire organization.

Those numbers give the season stakes that feel larger than Richmond beating Rupert or escaping relegation. Rebecca has committed the club to a project whose failure could affect everyone inside it. At the same time, asking the Lady Greyhounds to prove their financial worth without providing them with the resources necessary to succeed only makes that failure more likely.

Support needs to be more than just words, and AFC Richmond is being put to the test.

That is where Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 finds its sharpest conflict. Supporting women’s sports is easy when it remains a moral position or a slogan. The real test comes when that support demands money, space, staff, and sacrifice. Richmond cannot claim to believe in the Lady Greyhounds while asking them to build a professional team out of leftovers.

The injury to the team’s leading striker turns that institutional problem into something immediate. Until then, Richmond’s shortcomings can still be treated as logistical problems. The Wi-Fi can be fixed. A room can be renovated. The budget can be reconsidered. Watching the team’s most important player go down during practice makes the fragility of the entire project clear.

This is second-division women’s football. The Lady Greyhounds do not have unlimited depth or the financial protection available to larger clubs. One injury can transform a season, threaten a player’s livelihood, and turn every frightening number on Leslie’s spreadsheets into reality.

It also pushes Ted and Alice toward becoming an actual coaching partnership. Alice does not suddenly forget that Ted received the job she wanted, and Ted does not pretend he can charm away the tension between them. The players need both coaches to move beyond the circumstances that placed them together. Alice knows this team. Ted knows how to make people believe they can become more than what others have decided for them. Whether those strengths can coexist may become one of the season’s most compelling questions.

Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley bring some necessary warmth to the locker room story. Roy knows exactly why the visitors’ room is so terrible because Richmond made it that way on purpose. Once the Lady Greyhounds are placed inside it, the old competitive joke becomes an indictment of the club’s priorities.

Roy helping Keeley improve the space also continues the much quieter evolution of their relationship. At this point, their story feels less like a will-they-won’t-they romance and more like a question of when they will finally get there. Their connection remains obvious, but Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 allows it to emerge through the way they work together instead of forcing another dramatic conversation about their feelings.

By the end of Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2, the Lady Greyhounds finally receive a locker room that feels like it belongs to them. It is a meaningful step, especially after seeing how little Richmond initially provided. Still, a renovated room cannot insulate the team from the realities of second-division women’s football.

The pressure to succeed more than ever is the driving foundation of Ted Lasso Season 4.

Their leading striker is injured, the team remains underfunded, and its financial future is tied to the stability of the entire club. Every loss carries an unfair additional weight. Richmond’s men were allowed to struggle, rebuild, and nearly collapse without being asked to justify the existence of men’s football. The Lady Greyhounds know their failure could become an argument against giving women this opportunity again.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 makes that pressure the foundation of Season 4. Rebecca has to support the team when doing so becomes financially frightening. Ted has to recognize when Alice understands the job better than he does. Alice must establish her authority while working beneath the man who received the position she never had the chance to pursue.

Ted may have brought the series back to Richmond, but the Lady Greyhounds give its return a purpose. Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 begins testing whether AFC Richmond can extend everything it claims to believe to those who never had a place inside its walls.
