REVIEW: ‘Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation’ Season 3 Episode 5 — “Celebrations”

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 5, “Celebrations,” sees joyous occasions observed as the good times continue for Rudeus (Yumi Uchiyama, The Grimm Variations) and his family. But even with happiness all around them, the family is always looking for ways to strengthen their bonds. 

Opening this week’s episode is Cliff (Ryôta Ôsaka, Daemons of the Shadow Realm) and Elinalise’s (Rie Tanaka, Record of Ragnarok) marriage. Given Elinalise’s backstory, this opening brings a wonderful sense of closure to her character’s arc. The rejection and loneliness she endured from the curse she carries are now things of the past, thanks to the understanding and love of her new husband.

Seeing the duo exchange signs of their commitment and seal their vows is a splendid moment that feels well-earned. It was surprising to see Elinalise manage to be so restrained with the kiss, though. One would expect she’d want to make everyone present blush as a matter of principle. 

On their way home from the wedding, as the family basks in the high spirits of such a joyous occasion, Rudeus realizes they never had birthday parties for Alisha (Yûki Takada, Visions of Mana) and Norn (Saya Aizawa, Engage Kiss). Given everything the duo has gone through over the past couple of years, Rudeus decides that late is better than never and recruits his wives to help him set up a surprise party.

Through the preparations and party itself, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 5 uses its time to build up several of the interpersonal dynamics within the family. Rudeus, Roxy (Konomi Kohara, Witch Watch), and Sylphette (Ai Kayano, Platinum End) go shopping for presents, leading them to great purchases for more than just the girls, while also capping their night with dinner and a night together away from the house. This sees the trio continue to deepen their bonds, as it marks the first time they all spend the night together.

A fishing trip set up to get the girls out of the house so the party can be set up also brings some lovely moments with it. Given Norn’s feelings about polygamous relationships, she and Roxy haven’t really connected much since the latter joined the family. Thanks to Rudeus’s surprisingly astute behavior, the two get a chance to bond as Roxy shows Norn the ins and outs of fishing. 

How Roxy and Norn manage to close the metaphorical distance between them works wonderfully. There is a smoothly natural moment of surprise when an unexpected catch pulls both into the moment, causing them to come together before either can realize it and feel awkward. 

While all the beats in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 5 bring warm feelings, the narrative saves the best for last. Once the girls return home with their catches, they discover the birthday party awaiting them. After a heartfelt toast from Rudeus highlighting how far the family has come, despite its hard times, and how they need to celebrate as much as he knows Paul would want them to, food and presents are doled out. Though the biggest gift doesn’t show up in a box.

After opening the presents given to them by Rudeus, Roxy, and Sylphette, the girls rush to show their gifts to their moms. To the pleasant wonder of all, Zenith reacts to Norn’s joy. First turning to smile at her, then rising to pat her daughter’s head, seeing the largely catatonic Zenith begin to show a deeper awareness of her surroundings proves to be the best gift Norn could get.

The wave of hope that washes over everyone present is beautifully captured in the visuals. Later, Zenith also holds Lilia’s (Lynn, Raven of the Inner Palace) hand, giving the woman her own private moment of elation, especially given all that had passed between the two. 

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 5 delivers an uplifting, slice-of-life style narrative that never fails to feel good. The joy found in moments momentous and minor shines brightly, leaving a trail of warm vibes in its wake.
