DMZ, Call of Duty’s narrative-focused open world extraction shooter mode, makes its return when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026. The returning extraction shooter mode expands on its previous iteration, with DMZ becoming a living sandbox environment with plenty of combat scenarios to engage with, over a dozen points of interest, and multiple ways to complete quests and power through your progression track.
Developer Infinity Ward wanted a truly immersive world that pushes back the harder you push, with scaling enemies, dynamic objectives that change with each new deployment, realistic weather, and plenty of loot to kit yourself out with. We recently were presented with a hands-off preview detailing what players can expect when DMZ returns, but if you’re curious about campaign and multiplayer, check out our preview impressions here.
MW4’s DMZ ties directly into its campaign, described by the team as “a game within a game”. They wanted to create a very cohesive Modern Warfare universe with players swapping between the two modes on the fly without missing beats. In-game, you and your squad of two other operatives play as CIA assets whose mission is to secure, capture, and neutralize WMD’s in the nuclear wasteland of an exclusion zone.
Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ is aiming to bring every piece of the environment to life.

You’ll explore what the team refers to as “the ultimate sandbox”, the new map, Hajin, which they’ve also described as unlike any other map they’ve done in the past. The team wanted to emphasize Hajin as a living, breathing world; it follows a sort of Grand Theft Auto star system where the more you loot, kill, and explore, the more the world throws at you, and at an equivalent scale. Air traffic, hostile convoys, and patrols all roam Hajin and scale with you, so the longer you take to extract, the harder the resistance will be.
At launch, there will be three different DMZ modes you can play. You can drop into Free Roam and get your bearings, learn the map, the POIs, and study enemy patterns. Or if you want to experience the narrative, regular story missions are available to play through with other people.
Then there are Dynamic Operations, with ever-shifting parameters to give you a more challenging experience and different objectives. Regardless of which mode you play, they all add to DMZ’s bespoke progression track.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode is aiming to be more expansive than before.

While you’re exploring and looting the world, you’ll collect gear and store it in your backpack, and you have the ability to 3D print useful items on the fly. As with many other extraction shooters, this is a crucial component of the gameplay loop, and focusing on looting and outfitting your operative with stronger gear can mean the difference between a successful exfil and certain death.
Another fun inclusion is PVP leaderboards. When you drop into a match, other squads will join around you. You have the option to take them and snag their gear, and if you kill enough players, you’ll become Wanted, pinging you on the map for other players.
If you’re taken out in this state, the enemy can collect your dogtag for even more rewards when extracted. There will be global and friend list leaderboards, with the top 50 Hunters and top 50 Killers shown off each week, giving players who enjoy this mechanic plenty of incentive to engage with human players.
This is just scratching the surface of what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s returning DMZ mode has to offer. With this, its new campaign location, and a multiplayer mode with plenty of fresh updates, this is shaping up to be a Call of Duty for the ages.
