Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has been an absolute masterclass in how to do superhero storytelling. Its finale, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 8, brings things home in an unusually perfect manner. Entitled “The Southern Cross” and directed by Iain B. MacDonald from a script by Dario Scardapane & Jesse Wigutow (Tron: Ares), everything that this series and the Netflix incarnation have worked towards comes to a satisfying, explosive head that brings the rivalry of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) to what feels like a natural conclusion.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 8 begins with Matt Murdock walking back into the courtroom, even after being assaulted by the AVTF. He has Wilson Fisk take the stand, where he shows the testimony from Christophi Savva. However, there’s an issue: for the evidence to hold up in court and exonerate Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Matt needs someone to corroborate The Northern Star’s testimony.

Matt then pulls his ultimate gambit, submitting himself as the witness and revealing his identity to the world as Daredevil. As shocking as this moment is, it feels earned; Matt’s secret identity was always for the protection of himself and the people around him, so now that unmasking would help keep his loved one, Karen, safe, he, of course, does it the first chance he gets.

Matt and Fisk’s journey comes full circle in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 8.

The judge dismisses the case, but the AVTF immediately tries to kill Matt. Thankfully, Matt has a guardian angel in Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), who stops them. Of course, he gets a little too greedy and tries to shoot Fisk, only to shoot Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan) instead. Chaos erupts in the courthouse. Daredevil’s supporters swarm the locked-down building until AVTF officer Cole North (Jeremy Isaiah Earl) lets them in. Meanwhile, Fisk is offered a deal to avoid jail time by going into exile, but this only unleashes the beast in him.

Fisk starts tearing through the chambers of the courthouse, brutally beating down Daredevil’s supporters, while Daredevil, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Angela del Toro/White Tiger (Camila Rodriguez) fight their way through the AVTF. The hallway fight has always been a staple of the Daredevil television franchise, and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 8 intercuts two brutal fights, heroes and villains, together and having them meet in the middle feels like a stroke of genius.

When Fisk gets to the middle of the courthouse, Daredevil’s supporters swarm him and start beating him to near-death. Matt gets them to stop, telling Fisk that it’s over for both of them. After a bit of defiant pouting, where Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox are just acting their tails off, Kingpin relents and agrees to take the deal. Matt Murdock turns himself in, the AVTF are arrested, Jessica Jones reunites with Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Dex is now hired by Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard).

The puzzle pieces are moved for many characters, setting the stage for future installments.

And with that, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 8 brings an outstanding season of television to a perfect close. The rivalry between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, Daredevil vs. Kingpin, has been playing out for over a decade on television and has continued to evolve in interesting ways. Now, if this truly is how it is to end, it couldn’t have ended more perfectly. Even though there is a Season 3 coming, it truly feels as if Daredevil has completed everything he’s needed to do.

Fitting with his Catholic roots, Matt has now made the ultimate sacrifice for his people. None of it feels unearned. That’s due to Dario Scardapane, whose graceful showrunning created a solid throughline for the whole season where every subplot counted. Hell, every minute of screentime counted. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 8 feels like the conclusion to a great comic book run where the whole winding journey, even the messy season that came before, all coalesces into something beautiful.

Knowing that Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is on the horizon could affect some viewers’ perception of the definitive nature of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 8. Nevertheless, I see it as the closing of one chapter to make way for another. Wherever the journey of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen takes us next is anyone’s guess. For now, one of the best comic book adaptations on television just wrapped up an arc that started all the way back in 2015, and it couldn’t have come to a better conclusion.
