Everything To Know About Kafka Hibino

Kafka Hibino is the main protagonist of Kaiju No. 8. The 32-year-old monster cleaner shoots his last shot at his dream of joining the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. There’s only one problem: he’s a kaiju. The Kaiju No. 8 manga, created by Naoya Matsumoto, has been a hit series for fans of the kaiju genre. Now, the anime series brings Kafka and his comrades’ story to life through animation.

Kaiju No. 8 takes place in a world where giant monsters have plagued humanity for years. The shonen series centers on Kafka Hibino, an underachiever dissatisfied with how his life turned out. Kafka dreamed of joining the Defense Force to help fight against the Kaiju but gave up years ago. One day, his ambition is reignited to try out for the Defense Force one last time. Unfortunately, Kafka Hibino gets infected by a parasitic kaiju creature, transforming him into the monster he wants to destroy. While things seem more hopeless for Kafka’s chances of joining the Defense Force, he decides to go through with it and use his new kaiju powers to help save humanity.

This article dives into everything about Kafka Hibino, unlikely shonen hero.

Tragic Backstory & Childhood Promises

Kafka Hibino Kaiju No 8

Kafka Hibino grew up with his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro, in their neighborhood until their homes were destroyed in a kaiju attack. Following the attack, Kafka and Mina promise to join the Kaiju Defense Force to eradicate all kaiju and help save humanity. Unfortunately, after several failed attempts on the entrance exam, Kafka settles for a job as a monster sweeper. His job is to clean up the bodies of dead kaiju after attacks.

Kafka Hibino finds some value in his career as a monster sweeper, even if he plays a less glamorous role than the Defense Squad. However, deep down, he is unhappy with how his life turned out and wishes to change. Kafka feels ashamed that he let down Mina, who went on to join the Defense Force and rose the ranks to become the leader of the Third Division. But since he is 32, he is too old to enter the Defense Force. After a chance encounter with Reno Ichikawa and a series of events, Kafka’s determination reignites, and he sets out to make one final attempt to achieve his dream.

Becoming Kaiju No. 8

Shortly after Kafka and Ichikawa survive the kaiju attack and recover in a hospital, an unknown flying kaiju creature appears before Kafka out of nowhere. The creature is different from the average kaiju and seemingly more advanced, given that it can speak and purposefully sought out Kafka Hibino as a host. After finding Kafka, the parasitic-like creature forces itself into his mouth and turns him into a humanoid daikaiju, identified by the Defense Force, Kaiju No. 8.

Abilities & Powers

Kafka Hibino Kaiju No 8

After getting infected by the kaiju, Kafka gains the power to transform into a powerful kaiju. Transformed, he exhibits enormous strength, enhanced speed, durability, and reflexes. Over time, Kafka gains more control over his kaiju powers. He can even transform parts of his body to help him lessen his time spent as a kaiju. As Kaiju No. 8, Kafka’s physical abilities are enhanced, and he also possesses supernatural powers like regeneration and emitting energy blasts. In addition to his enhanced kaiju powers, Kafka combines his strength with hand-to-hand combat techniques for close combat fights with more advanced enemies, like Kaiju No. 9.

When Kafka is not in his transformed kaiju form, he is more disadvantaged than his comrades. The Defense Force utilizes combat suits and bioweapons that augment the wearer’s physical abilities to make them stronger and more durable. The suit also measures the wearers’ combat power, indicating the level of their strength and skills. At the same time, many of Kafka Hibino’s comrades can bring out their combat power by wearing the suits. Kafka struggles to barely just 1% of the suit’s combat power.

Kafka’s kaiju transformation has likely affected his ability to effectively utilize the combat suit and weapons due to his hybrid kaiju body and the changes to his physiology. Apart from his kaiju powers and physical abilities, Kafka is very knowledgeable about kaiju anatomy, as shown by his previous job. His extensive knowledge and experience with kaiju anatomy make him a valuable asset on the battlefield as he provides support and strategy to his teammates.

Personality

Kafka Hibino Kaiju No 8

Since Kafka was young, he has always had a genuine, kind, and caring nature. This is evident in how he tries to encourage his childhood friend Mina after their homes are destroyed in a kaiju attack. Or when he comes to the aid of his comrades like Ichikawa and Kikoru. Kafka’s personality usually leads him to go out of his way to help others even if they don’t want it.

As one of the older members of his Defense Force squad, Kafka is somewhat of a big brother figure to a few of his comrades who admire him. However, Kafka can also be a childish goofball, making him the butt of jokes and not taken seriously all the time. As time passes, others recognize him as a reliable friend and comrade when it counts. So much so that his determination and dedication inspire others around him to push past their own limits and reach new heights. Kafka Hibino naturally cares deeply for his comrades and is willing to do anything to help them.

Although Kafka likes to appear mature and put on a brave face for others, he struggles with his own challenges, too. In the manga, he fears losing control of his Kaiju powers and becoming a mindless monster who will hurt people. The situation causes him to consider never transforming again, but thanks to encouragement from his friends, he learns he needs to put his trust in them and their abilities too.
