One Punch Man World

At San Diego Comic-Con 2023, Crunchyroll Games showcased their highly anticipated project, One Punch Man: World, and it did not disappoint. Developed by Perfect World, this multiplayer action title allows players to step into the shoes of their favorite One-Punch Man characters on Windows PC, iOS, and Android, with the added benefit of cross-platform play and progression. The demo offered a taste of what’s to come, combining iconic moments from the anime’s first season with all-new and expanded scenarios, including an explorable Z City filled with side quests and mini-games.

One of the standout aspects of the One Punch Man: World demo was the easy and intuitive controls. Moving with WASD and executing basic attacks with left-click felt natural, and the space bar provided a quick dash or block, depending on the character. Each character has three unique abilities and an ultimate attack. The ultimate attacks were a visual spectacle, each tailored to the character’s style, adding to the excitement of taking down lesser foes. The big boss battles took cues from Dark Souls and Monster Hunter, with telegraphed moves and phases that kept players on their toes, delivering a thrilling challenge.

The story mode follows the anime‘s first season beat by beat, but the game smartly fills in gaps in the narrative, providing players with the chance to experience events that took place before Saitama‘s intervention. For instance, players can engage in a battle that led to two heroes being knocked out, a detail missing from the anime. Not only does it add depth to the storytelling of not only One Punch Man: World but the anime as well. It also gives players an opportunity to play more than just Saitama as the game progresses, adding to the immersion.

Interactivity is key in One Punch Man: World, with vending machines and cafes, allowing players to purchase items like bentos and food for stat boosts during battles. The arcade features delightful easter eggs and mini-games, such as a Temple Run-style experience with Genos. The game world dynamically changes with day and night cycles, weather variations, and interactions with NPCs based on the chosen character. Easter eggs and unique interactions between characters provide an additional layer of depth, encouraging exploration and discovery.

Adding to the experience, the day and night cycles, along with weather changes, added dynamism to the world, influencing the appearance and behavior of NPCs and events. The developers cleverly inserted easter eggs that allowed for specific interactions between characters, opening up potential side quests and adding layers of complexity to the story. The desire to just spend your time just roaming Z City looking for these interactions was very strong during the One Punch Man: World demo.

Talking to those heroes isn’t the only thing you will do. The One Punch Man: World demo featured a diverse roster of heroes, each with unique mechanics and variations. Characters like Genos demonstrated time-based mechanics, where players could change his attacks during specific visual cues, while others excelled in defense, offering players a wide array of playstyles to suit their preferences. These varying mechanics will prove crucial in multiplayer battles, allowing for strategic synergies between players and AI partners. As we delved deeper into the One Punch Man: World demo, we were thrilled to learn that characters would be unlocked over time as players progress through the story mode, mirroring the anime’s narrative.

Overall, Crunchyroll Games’ One Punch Man: World shows great promise with its engaging gameplay, attention to detail in world-building, and captivating roster of characters. The demo showcased at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 left us wanting more, and we can’t wait to dive further into the exhilarating world of One-Punch Man when the game is officially released. Crunchyroll Games has crafted a game worthy of the hero’s reputation.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
