Sonic Central-But Why Tho

Today, in celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 32nd birthday, SEGA hosted the third annual Sonic Central, a virtual fan-centric event streamed on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube and Twitch channels. New details were provided for the upcoming launch of Sonic Superstars as well as the “Sonic’s Birthday Bash Update” for Sonic Frontiers. The livestream also announced more locations and dates for the Sonic Symphony concert tour, detailed new collaborations with LEGO and Crocs, as well as various events at San Diego Comic-Con and more.

Below is a recap of all the Sonic gaming news discussed during the livestream of Sonic Central:

Sonic Superstars – Get ready for a new spin on classic Sonic in Sonic Superstars, arriving on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch family of systems, and PC later this year. Play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy in this brand-new game that combines classic high-speed 2D Sonic platforming action with an all-new look, new zones, and new powers and abilities. Players can also team up with friends in a four-player local co-op or put them up to the challenge with local and online battle modes. Additionally, Sonic and LEGO have teamed up for a brick-tacular DLC where fans can soon experience the Blue Blur in brick form with a free LEGO Sonic skin! Fans who pre-order Sonic Superstars will also get access to a special skin that transforms Eggman into LEGO Eggman!

Sonic Origins Plus – The Blue Blur is back in Sonic Origins Plus, available both physically and digitally today! Sonic Origins Plus is an all-in-one bundle featuring 16 titles, including 12 Game Gear titles, and for the first time ever, Amy Rose as a playable character in Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Sonic Origins Plus also adds the ability to play as Knuckles in Sonic CD with all new level paths designed for his unique abilities. Fans who already own Sonic Origins can purchase the Plus Expansion Pack, which gives players access to all of the new content.

Also revealed during Sonic Central,

Sonic Frontiers – Sonic’s Birthday Bash Update – Join the party with the new Sonic’s Birthday Bash Update, featuring new challenges, moves, a new collectible Koco, and free birthday decorations. Available today, starting at 5:00 pm PST, the free update also introduces New Game Plus, a feature that allows players to start the game over from the beginning with their skill tree and power-up levels inherited.

Sonic Speed Simulator in Roblox – SEGA and Gamefam introduced a new event that unlocks the Tuxedo Classic Sonic, the first ever alternate skin for Classic Sonic in Sonic Speed Simulator on Roblox, available now!

Samba de Amigo – Popular songs from Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Forces will be among the forty different tracks included in the game. Samba de Amigo: Party Central comes to the Nintendo Switch family of systems on August 29, along with the Meta Quest at a later date.

Mobile Games – Those who jump into Sonic Forces and Sonic Dash today can unlock Super Silver, a psychic hedgehog with super speed making him unstoppable. Separately, this July, Dragon Hunter Lancelot comes to Sonic Dash and Sonic Dash Plus on Apple Arcade. Classic Super Sonic joins Sonic Forces, Sonic Dash, and Sonic Dash Plus on Apple Arcade and Sonic Prime Dash on Netflix later this year.

It was also revealed during Sonic Central that Sonic and his friends can also be found on and off the screen this summer:

Netflix – This July, Netflix is set to release a new season of the popular animated series Sonic Prime. In addition, Sonic Dash, the original Sonic the Hedgehog mobile endless running game from SEGA, is making its official debut exclusively for Netflix as Sonic Prime Dash and will launch alongside the new season of Sonic Prime.

Symphony – Returning this September, fans can enjoy the magic that began with the unforgettable Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Symphony concert. The Sonic Symphony World Tour will officially kick off in London later this year, with more dates and locations to follow. Presale begins June 28 and public sale begins June 30. San Diego Comic-Con – Stop by the Sonic Pop-Up Restaurant Experience and enjoy SDCC like the blue hedgehog himself with Sonic-themed food, daily activations in the Sonic environment, and more!

The fun doesn’t stop there! In the coming months, SEGA announced at Sonic Central that they will be collaborating with a number of partners to release a diverse range of all-new, Sonic-branded items, including:

LEGO – Build, create, and play as Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Dr. Eggman in beloved levels, including Sonic’s Speed Sphere, the iconic Green Hill Zone, the recently announced Dr. Eggman’s Death Egg Robot and more!

Crocs – This red-hot Crocs collaboration includes new Sonic-inspired clogs and official Sonic Jibbitz charms featuring Sonic and friends Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles, and Shadow.

Jakks Pacific – Recreate epic battles with the Death Egg Playset from Jakks Pacific, using Sonic to grind on rails and defeat Dr. Eggman!

Igloo – The new sixteen-bit style Playmate cooler from Igloo showcases nostalgic snapshots of the classic Green Hill Zone and will be the perfect companion this summer. In celebration of Sonic’s birthday, 623 coolers purchased today will include an exclusive Sonic sticker/decal.

Hypland – Popular streetwear brand, Hypland, is bringing Sonic and friends to life with exclusive designs to celebrate the Sonic universe. The collection includes graphic tees, home goods, rugs, and more. Sonic fans can expect the collection on June 26!

S-Fire – Straight from Sonic Adventure 2, our heroes Sonic and Shadow have been sculpted into incredible statue form. Pre-orders start today!

ESP Guitars – The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is known for some of the most iconic music in gaming, and with the Sonic guitar from ESP, fans can soon create their own supersonic tunes!

Cable Guys – In collaboration with Cable Guys, gamers can level up with the all-new Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog gaming stands that can hold controllers, phones, and more.

IDW Publishing – To celebrate Amy’s 30th Anniversary, IDW Publishing will release a one-shot comic book in which Amy must save her friends and stop Dr. Eggman in an all-new Classic Sonic adventure.
