REVIEW: ‘Convergence: A League of Legends Story ‘Provides A Time-bending Platform Adventure (PC)

Developed by Double Stallion Games and published by Riot Forge, Convergence: A League of Legends Story is a single-player action platformer set in the world of the hit franchise League of Legends. The game follows a young Ekko as he investigates a mysterious explosion in his home of Zaun, embarking on a mission to save his present and future. Convergence: A League of Legends Story game excels in several areas, offering a satisfying gameplay experience and an engaging storyline that expands upon the League of Legends universe.

One of the game’s strengths lies in its platforming and combat mechanics. The controls are smooth, allowing for enjoyable platforming and satisfying combat experiences, even on PC. The customizable keybindings add to the game’s accessibility, ensuring that players can tailor their controls to their preferences and making the early game controls easy to pick up. As players progress through the game as Ekko, he gains access to new abilities and inventions, which inject freshness into both platforming and combat. The upgrades are introduced gradually, providing a sense of growth and mastery, but most importantly prevent the game from feeling stale. The ability to upgrade gadgets and the skill tree, obtained through defeating enemies and exploring, allows players to customize Ekko’s playstyle, making each playthrough unique. The abundance of combinations ensures that no single ability or gadget upgrade feels mandatory, allowing players to experiment and find their preferred playstyle.

The diverse range of enemies encountered throughout the game keeps combat encounters exciting and varied. Each enemy type requires different strategies, adding depth to the gameplay and making every battle feel distinct. As more and more foes are added to the game, it requires players to think harder and adjust their playstyles accordingly as what works on one enemy make not work on another. The combat in Convergence: A League of Legends Story really amps up when waves of these various combatants are on screen at one time, pushing players to act fast, time parries and dodges, and use a wide range of abilities to avoid being cornered.

If players feel like they are struggling with the combat or platforming or need more of a challenge, Convergence: A League of Legends Story provides solutions. Instead of a fixed difficulty setting, the game allows players to adjust specific aspects of the gameplay at any point. Mechanics like enemy aggressiveness, battle compositions, and traversal layouts have their own difficulty levels, along with the ability to adjust Ekko’s health and base charges for Rewind, Ekko’s basic ability. This level of customization ensures that players of all skill levels can enjoy the game at their own pace, without sacrificing challenge or engagement. Additionally, Rewind serves as an accessibility feature by enabling players to rewind gameplay, making room for experimentation and learning from mistakes in real time.

Convergence A League of Legends Story - But Why Tho(1)

The combat and platforming give players a feeling of control over the fan-favorite character from the franchise’s MOBA. The story builds upon this immersion in the League of Legends universe. By focusing on a young Ekko, players get to witness the evolution of Zaun and Piltover’s relationship, two central locations in the game’s lore. Players are treated to a glimpse of how these locales have evolved over time, providing a captivating backdrop for Ekko’s journey akin to Netflix’s Arcane. The internal struggles faced by Ekko as he grapples with the consequences of his time-manipulating inventions add depth to his character and create an emotional connection with players. The inclusion of familiar faces, such as Warwick, Jinx, and Camille, further enhances the immersion in the League of Legends world as the game strikes a balance between catering to longtime fans by offering nods to established lore and providing enough context for newcomers to understand and appreciate the story.

While Convergence: A League of Legends Story delivers a highly enjoyable experience, there are a few areas where it could improve. One such aspect is the duration of full power for Ekko. By the time players unlock the game’s final chapter, Ekko’s abilities have reached their full potential and become incredibly enjoyable to use. However, the game concludes shortly after, leaving little room to fully explore and utilize his newfound abilities without going through another playthrough. Allowing players to unlock all abilities a chapter or two earlier would have provided a more extended period to revel in Ekko’s newfound power.

Additionally, more backstory on Ekko and Zaun would have enriched the game. While League of Legends fans and viewers of the Arcane series might already be familiar with Ekko’s background, newcomers could benefit from additional context. Exploring Ekko’s past or delving deeper into Zaun’s history if only briefly would have provided a more complete picture of the character and the world he inhabits. As Future Ekko is such a titular aspect of the game, having even a brief look at Ekko’s past could have gone a long way in fleshing out the world for the unfamiliar and giving a complete past, present, and future version of Ekko to draw from.

Finally while minor, the menu controls on PC, particularly the map controls utilizing page up and page down to zoom in and out, can be bothersome. Most of the PC controls revolve around the left hand in the typical WASD range. Having to utilize page up and page down is very inconvenient and had me searching for the right keys on more than one occasion. Implementing natural scroll controls for zooming, similar to the scroll wheel, would have improved the user experience, especially considering that other control functions are customizable.

Overall, Convergence: A League of Legends Story delivers an immersive and satisfying adventure with plenty of room for personalization and offers an enjoyable and engaging experience that knows exactly what it needs to be. With its polished platforming and combat mechanics, customizable difficulty options, and a captivating storyline set in the League of Legends universe, it has much to offer both fans and newcomers alike. While there are areas for improvement, the game successfully delivers an immersive and satisfying adventure with plenty of room for personalization. Whether you’re a fan of the League of Legends franchise or a newcomer looking for an action-packed platformer, Convergence: A League of Legends Story is well worth exploring.

Convergence: A League of Legends Story is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
