DC Comics July 13th

DC Comics had some brilliant comics out this week, and all of them feature the Dark Knight. It seems the man in black has been busy across the pages of comics in this cycle. So let me give you the inside scoop of which DC Comics July 13th made my list. Check out last week’s list here.

Detective Comics #1039

Detective Comics #1039

Creative team: Mariko Tamaki, Viktor Bogdanovic, Daniel Henriques, Norm Rapmund, Jordie Bellaire, Aditya Bidikar, T. Rex, Simon Gough, and Rob Leigh

It looks like someone brought a batarang to a bazooka fight! As the explosive battle royal between Batman and Mr. Worth roars to a climax, Huntress is on the trail of the other major threat plaguing Gotham City: violence parasite Vile! By the end of this battle, one character will be dead, one avenged, and even more holding on for dear life! PLUS: In The Vile Truth, catch a glimpse into the secret origin of Detective Comics break-out villain Vile through the lens of writer/artist Tristan Jones!

Detective Comics has been a really enjoyable series these last few issues, and #1039 is no exception. This week we finally get face to face with Hue Vile, and my word, the visuals for his character are superb but don’t get too close. Brimming with tension, fantastic artwork, and a great villain, I’d absolutely recommend picking this up.

Detective Comics #1039 can be found on ComiXology and wherever comics are sold.

Justice League Last Ride #3

Justice League Last Ride #3 - But Why Tho

Creative team: Chip Zdarsky, Miguel Mendonça, Enrica Angiolini, and Andworld Design

Apokolips: once the fiery terror of the Multiverse, now a lifeless husk filled with ghosts and dark secrets. Will the planet formerly ruled by Darkseid help the Justice League…or destroy it?

This issue captures everything brilliant about the Justice League. I didn’t even mind that they had a super friends campfire with s’mores. Although the contrasted humor of doing this on Apokolips wasn’t wasted on me. I loved the character development and the carefully crafted tension with a great cliffhanger for the next issue.

Justice League Last Ride #3 can be found on ComiXology and wherever comics are sold.

Batman the Detective #4

Batman The Detective #4

Creative team: Tom Taylor, Andy Kubert, Sandra Hope, Brad Anderson, and Clem Robins

Bruce Wayne is facing charges for the attempted murder of former mentor and teacher Henri Ducard and faces a grueling Interpol interrogation. Nothing is as it appears, however, as the Gotham expatriate charges into a lion’s den of mystery and duplicity without the benefit of Batman’s tools. Will the onetime Dark Knight escape unscathed?

By far my favorite read this week. Where has this series been hiding from me? This is Tom Taylor at his best, and you can feel his energy pouring out through the pages. An issue that you can easily can get lost in, with visuals to marvel at. I’m excited to see where Taylor and crew are leading us to next.

Batman the Detective #4 can be found on ComiXology and wherever comics are sold.

Infinite Frontier #2

Infinite Frontier #2 - But Why Tho

Creative team: Josh Williamson, Paul Pelletier, Jesus Merino, Xermanico, Norm Rampund, Romula Fajardo Jr, and Tom Napolitano

What secrets and changes lurk inside the newly expanded Multiverse? The devious Director Bones of the D.E.O. re-forms a ragtag team to keep the new worlds at bay, but was highly skilled agent Cameron Chase recruited because the director needs her help or because he wants a patsy when things go south? Meanwhile, Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, takes drastic measures to find his missing daughter. Someone has kidnapped Jade, and Alan’s going to find out why and bring her home. Plus, the resurrection of Roy Harper gives the former Teen Titan some unexpected and unpredictable new powers.

My word, Infinite Frontier is coming at its readers hard and fast. Williamson has an ace up his sleeve with this story, and there are slivers of what’s to come peeking out in this issue. The multiverse has been repaired, but not everything is as it was, and cracks are starting to appear. A great read, but give me issue #3 pronto.

Infinite Frontier #2 can be found on ComiXology and wherever comics are sold.

Batman Urban Legends #5

Batman Urban Legends #5

Creative team: Matthew Rosenberg, Ryan Benjamin, Antonio Fabela, Saida Temofonte, Chip Zdarsky, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Diogenes Neves, Marcus To, Adriano Lucas, Becca Carey, Meghan Fitzmartin, Belen Ortega, Alejandro Sanchez, Pat Brosseau, Marguerite Bennett, Sweeney Boo, Marissa Louise, and Becca Carey

“Red Hood” Meet Cheer, the villain behind the insidious Cheerdrops altering the citizens of Gotham. When confronted with a man responsible for taking the lives of so many, including Tyler, the kid Jason Todd swore to protect, will Red Hood be able to stop himself from taking vengeance for a whole city? “Grifter” Through four chapters of blood, bullets, and Batman, the true reason for Cole Cash emerging in Gotham City reveals itself at last…but it’s not what you think! “Tim Drake” Tim is determined to find his friend Bernard, who was taken by a Chaos Monster before his very eyes. But this case is different from any Tim has taken on before, and the cracks are starting to show. “Batgirls” Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown are just two teenagers breaking into Wayne Manor so they can play some video games. But when Oracle gives them a mission, the Batgirls suit up and head to an abandoned arcade to investigate.

Four stories, around 70 pages, and look at all those creatives involved. Each story is given time and space to unfold, making for some great one-shots to simply sit back and enjoy. The stories themselves are all really solid and will keep you engaged until the last page.

Batman Urban Legends #5 can be found on ComiXology and wherever comics are sold.

Lots of Batman and a ludicrous amount of amazing artwork to enjoy that makes the DC Comics July 13th list. A lot of the issues I picked this week had some really tantalizing mysterious elements to them, and personally, there’s no better feeling than getting to the end of a comic and feeling like you got to have that next issue ASAP.

Synopsis for the comics featured in What Comics to Read: DC Comics July 13th were taken directly from ComiXology.

While not particularly sacry, Cronos: The New Dawn is a lot of fun as a survival horror that puts you in the futuristic armor of the Traveler.
