RECAP: ‘Brilliant Minds’ Season 2 Episode 19 — “The Hero’s Journey”

The end is nigh for Brilliant Minds, but Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19, “The Hero’s Journey,” still has more surprises in store for us despite being the penultimate episode. While Wolf’s (Zachary Quinto) time at Hudson Oaks had a long buildup for a short stay in the psychiatric facility, it didn’t feel rushed. However, “The Hero’s Journey” is where things start to feel a little cramped in these final episodes of the series.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 throws us into a teenager’s romantasy novel before we’re pulled out of it by a seizure. A wheelchair user, Finn, was paralyzed two years ago after complications during a spinal surgery to remove a tumor. The experience left him and his mother wary of hospitals, which means it takes some convincing from Wolf for Finn to agree to an MRI to see what’s wrong.

If anything has been constant throughout this show, it’s that Wolf cares about his patients. The lengths he’ll go to for his patients is on display again in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 when he convinces Josh (Teddy Sears) and Beau (Marco Pigossi) to perform an awake brain surgery on Finn after they decided Finn wasn’t a good candidate for such a surgery due to his anxiety around medical procedures. One moment of panic could cause Josh and Beau to make a mistake, leaving Finn without speech or control of his body. But Wolf’s thesis that they should give their patients a chance allows for the surgery to happen.

Wolf remains consistent even as Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 speedruns through its plots.

Beau brings Finn’s case to Josh and Wolf, meaning this love triangle is still in full force in the penultimate episode of the series. Beau’s acknowledgement of Josh’s feelings for Wolf in the last episode felt like the end of them to me, but Beau is still in this, apparently. This makes Josh’s words to Wolf at the end of the previous episode about still figuring things out a bit more concerning than originally thought.

Beau seems aware of the lingering feelings between Josh and Wolf throughout Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19, yet he still ends the episode asking Josh to marry him. Talk about getting slapped in the face with something you didn’t see coming.

The Brilliant Minds’ cancellation is obviously messing up my patience for some of these storylines. If a Season 3 were happening, this drawn-out love triangle would feel more angsty and dynamic, rather than stalling way past its expiration date. The problem stems from the lack of Josh’s take on any of this.

We’ve heard from Wolf, who wants Josh back, and we’ve heard from Beau numerous times about what he wants, but also that he’s noticed the lingering feelings between Wolf and Josh. But Josh’s point of view has been lost a bit, stuck in denial and with frustrating reservations about expressing what he wants. However, Beau’s proposal might be the final straw that gets Josh to make a decision. Please, dear god, just make a decision.

The love triangle hits its peak with a surprising proposal, but the series’ cancellation steals its thunder.

Dana’s (Aury Krebs) investigation into Dr. Amelia Fredricks begins and ends in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19, but it’s satisfying nonetheless. Dana, Wolf, Carol, and Dr. Adler work together to gather evidence of Amelia’s use of the court system to rein in patients’ insurance money as their cases get caught up in legalese. Hector and the other patients Wolf bonded with while inside agree to come forward and testify that they’ve been denied their freedom by Amelia.

While Dana gets her victory here, she still loses. Katie returns in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 to remind Dana that they’re going to her cousin’s wedding this weekend, which will be the first time Dana meets Katie’s family. But Dana’s investigation into Amelia and her general day-to-day work at Hudson Oaks keeps her busy, and she ends up missing their departure for the wedding by hours. Katie sits in Dana’s apartment waiting for her return, and when she arrives, celebrating her win against Amelia, clearly having forgotten about the wedding for a second time, Katie officially calls it quits.

It’s sad, but not out of left field. Dana and Katie have been having issues lately, with the most recent one being Dana’s decision not to move in with Katie. They had seemed like they worked past that, though, but with Dana’s reluctance to meet Katie’s family and the fact that she hasn’t returned Katie’s “I love you,” it’s probably the right decision on Katie’s part. But it’s sad and horrible, and the series is about to end, and it’s not fair.

Katie’s return sparks more drama and delivers a crushing blow to Dana’s winning trajectory.

Especially because the breakup feels a bit like a setup to have Dana in a bar drinking alone when Sofia (Sarah Steele) shows back up, this time talking to someone who is not Wolf. She and Dana flirt at the bar, and the lingering glances between the two are pretty obvious about where that’s going later that night.

Sofia is the big revelation that Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 throws at us in the second-to-last hour of the series. It’s a pretty big twist with just one episode to go, but it does finally give an answer as to what happened when Wolf arrived at his father’s house during the midseason premiere.

Josh’s reservations aren’t the only thing keeping Josh and Wolf from getting back together. Wolf feels a hesitancy too, and when he thinks he sees Sofia again in the halls of Bronx General, that hesitancy only gets worse. He mentions it to Dr. Adler, who assures him that the memory of Sofia might take a while to go away because even though she wasn’t real, she was real to Wolf.

But Wolf still seems uneasy. It’s through watching Finn overcome his fear and step into the role of the hero in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 that allows Wolf to finally confront what happened at his dad’s house.

Sofia’s introduction is the biggest twist of the episode.

He brings Carol with him and shows her the photos he had found when he arrived at his father’s house all those months ago. Photos of a whole different family, and a sister he never knew he had, named Sofia. His father didn’t just leave him 30 years ago; he had a whole other family. This revelation caused Wolf to conjure Sofia as a protective delusion from that truth.

Unfortunately, that means this new family dynamic between Wolf and Sofia only gets one episode to marinate, which feels too little too late. Curse this cancellation.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 showcases a nice reminder of what kind of doctor Wolf is when it comes to fighting for his patients. However, it both speedruns plot points that needed more time and draws out ones that needed to be over a while ago.

Part of this is obviously the fault of the cancellation, which limited their time to wrap things up properly. Dana and Katie unfortunately break up, but it’s probably the most emotionally dynamic story in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19. We’ll likely get more of Ericka in the finale, but she does get answers about her birth mother courtesy of Charlie, the nosey little fiend (semi-affectionate). All in all, a perfectly fine episode that’s at the mercy of network television cancellation decisions.
