REVIEW: ‘The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity’ Episode 8 – “The Meaning of These Feelings”

Although the relationship between Rintaro (Yoshinori Nakayama) and Kaoruko (Honoka Inoue) is the crux of the series, it takes until The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8 to see any real forward momentum. This makes the emotional realization all the more potent because it feels earned. Having spent so much time with supporting characters has had major benefits for both the characters, especially Rintaro, because their personalities are lived in and fleshed out. It’s not just about sticking two characters together and hoping for the best; the writing truly earns their romance.

In most romance anime, the central pairing and the understanding of their inevitable coupling are immediate. It’s not so much a question of if Marin and Gojo are going to get together in My Dress Up Darling, but rather when. And while some try to subvert expectations, like Skip and Loafer, it’s often less about the will they won’t they and more about how they transition from platonic to romantic, and then how the couple manages to maintain it while dealing with other personal struggles.

The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8 showcases Rintaro and his gradual comprehension of his feelings for Kaoruko. After spending so much time trying to ensure her spot in his life as a friend, they settle in and are allowed to simply be.

Rintaro introduces Kaoruko and Subaru to his friends.

Kaoruko in The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8

Two important interactions make up the bulk of The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8. The first event is the meeting between our two groups, where Rintaro introduces Kaoruko and Subaru (Aya Yamane) to his friends: Shohei (Kikunosuke Toya), Saku (Koki Uchiyama), and Ayato (Hiiro Ishibashi).

It’s a meeting that’s just as integral to the overarching story. Because, despite their different upbringings and the prejudices held between the two schools, this is the first moment where they’re able to humanize one another. And it works better because, again, we now care about these characters and are rooting for them to form a friendship.

There’s more to each of them than meets the eye, with Shohei reassuring Subaru that, despite the school’s reputation, they’re not worried about it. These little gestures help inform the group’s newfound dynamic as they navigate what it means to be friends after being told for so long that they can’t be.

But, of course, the most crucial sequence takes place between Rintaro and Kaoruko. Embarking on an unofficial date to the aquarium, the scenes offer a closer look at how the two interact and appear to one another. Their date is interrupted when they must help a lost child reunite with her parents.

The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8 allows for personal realizations.

Rintaro looks surprised

This sweet sequence is the pivotal moment in The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8. On the one hand, it allows for both characters to demonstrate their innate kindness once more. But, more than that, it opens up Rintaro’s eyes regarding his feelings for Kaoruko. The little girl thinks they’re a couple, and her childlike insight and perspective pave the way for Rintaro to admit to himself that he’s fallen for Kaoruko.

It comes as little surprise (he’s clearly liked her from Episode 1), but that doesn’t lessen the overall charming effect of the moment he realizes it. The aquarium date allows for greater shifts in color and tone, illuminated by blues and the light show that appears during the showcases. The series doesn’t always get the chance to cut loose with direction and animation style, but it’s always consistent in how it manages to enliven the source material. That said, the show could use a few more risk-takers behind the scenes.

Lovely and contemplative, The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8 delivers significant character moments. Aided by subtle vibrancy in the animation that contrasts the daytime meeting with the aquarium date, “The Meaning of These Feelings” is yet another solid and assured addition to the series. It’s not breaking barriers, but it’s wholesome with lovable characters, and sometimes that’s enough.

The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 8 is available now on Netflix.
