Dating is always hard, but in Prime Video’s new psychological drama series, The Girlfriend, it’s even worse. Earlier this month, Prime Video confirmed that The Girlfriend will premiere on September 10, 2025, exclusively on the platform.

Even better, the entire six-episode season will be available for streaming in over 240 countries and territories worldwide on day one, instead of following a weekly release cadence.. Starring Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke, the series is based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name and promises a tense exploration of family dynamics and fractured perceptions.

The series was adapted for television by Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, and episodes were written by a team including Sheldon, Asher, Polly Cavendish, Helen Kingston, Marek Horn, Ava Wong Davies, Isis Davis, Smita Bhide, and Matt Evans.

What is Prime Video’s The Girlfriend about?

The series centers on Laura, a woman who appears to have a perfect life, complete with a successful career, a devoted husband, and a cherished son, Daniel. Her seemingly idyllic existence is threatened when Daniel introduces his new girlfriend, Cherry.

From their first meeting, a sense of unease and suspicion grows, as Laura becomes convinced that Cherry is hiding a dark secret. The show masterfully poses the central question: Is Cherry a calculated social climber with manipulative intentions, or is Laura’s paranoia twisting her perception of reality? Through this compelling narrative, the series explores the idea that truth is a matter of perspective.
