Just one week after Atomic Heart celebrated reaching over 10 million players worldwide, developer Mundfish shared that Atomic Heart 2 is in active development for PC and consoles. The announcement was accompanied by a brand-new trailer, offering a first look at a fresh cast of characters, exotic new locations, a glimpse of the expanded arsenal and abilities, and confirmation of returning fan-favorites from the original.

“Ever since the launch of the original Atomic Heart, we’ve been floored by the unwavering support and enthusiasm of our playerbase. When we set out to create the Atomic Universe, we never imagined that the community would respond with such amazing passion,” shared Robert Bagratuni, Founder and CEO of Mundfish in a release to media.

Additionally, the Game Director of Atomic Heart 2. He added, “It’s been hard sitting on this announcement for so long, but today, at Summer Game Fest, we’re incredibly happy to finally and officially announce that Atomic Heart 2 is coming, and it’s bigger and bolder than the original.”

About Mundfish’s Atomic Heart, our critic said:

“Atomic Heart is a pretty game with well-thought-out level designs, creature designs, and visual concepts that help immerse the player. But it’s Mick Gordon’s score and the choice of old Russian songs that truly make it reach a level of immersion in spots perfectly, even if the aesthetic doesn’t really stand out from others in the genre of retrofuturism.

When the game uses Gordon’s score to the fullest, tension mounts, and action becomes more than entertaining. This is particularly true for boss battles that happen throughout the game. Music and sound design do a lot of work in keeping you engaged when combat lulls and excitement wanes.”

What is Atomic Heart 2?

Atomic Heart 2 is poised to be an action-adventure RPG, further expanding on the retrofuturistic alternate-history universe that defined its predecessor. Mundfish is emphasizing a strong focus on narrative, enhanced RPG elements, and player freedom. The sequel promises an all-new story unfolding in a living world, with the game’s events now escalating to a global scale.

Much like its predecessor, this sequel is set in an alternate-history retrofuturistic universe where humanity once coexisted with loyal robots. However, what was intended to be an era of peace and prosperity, fueled by advanced robotics and AI, has spiraled into chaos. Atomic Heart 2 picks up with a world teetering on the brink of collapse, and it’s up to the player to avert disaster. Mundfish hints that “the truth runs deeper than anyone may realize.”

Key features highlighted for Atomic Heart 2 include:
  • Realistic graphics depict a dystopian, retrofuturistic setting.
  • An expanded RPG system designed to immerse players in a living game world filled with diverse activities.
  • A continuation of the story with a gripping plot, mysteries, and high stakes, featuring both beloved returning characters and new ones.
  • An enhanced, explosive combat system that allows players to use both hands simultaneously, combining glove abilities with a wide array of melee and ranged weapons.
