The new Overwatch 2 Stadium game mode was launched last week, as the headliner of Season 16 and the ‘third pillar of Overwatch.’ The mode has been incredibly well received by players, who are sinking hours into it, but there’s always room for ways to improve and build on what’s already out there.
The Overwatch team has revealed a roadmap to keep the hype train rolling. The roadmap touches on the Heroes, maps, and other changes coming to Stadium through Season 19 and beyond.
So, without further ado, let’s get into what’s coming to Stadium in the future!
The Roadmap for Overwatch 2 Stadium
Here are the highlights of the Overwatch 2 Stadium Roadmap.
Heroes
During the midseason patch, the Overwatch 2 Stadium roster will feature the first new Hero to be added, Freja. She won’t be the only hero coming. Multiple new heroes will be added to the roster each season to keep things fresh and exciting for players engaging in the Stadium.
For Season 17, dropping in June, Sigma, Junkrat, and Zenyatta will be added to the hero roster. Season 18, which is expected to launch in August, will add Winston, Sojourn, and Brigitte as new Overwatch 2 Stadium heroes.
Game Modes
Starting with Season 17, expect new game modes within Overwatch 2 Stadium and brand new maps for your gaming pleasure. The new game mode coming specifically in Season 18 is the Payload Race, with more information coming soon. As for the maps, Esperanca and Samoa are the expected map additions coming to Season 17, with Season 18 expecting the launch of the new Route 66 and London maps. Season 19, the game plan is to add the new China map to Overwatch 2 Stadium.
In addition, the team will integrate a new mechanic. At the start of each match, players will select from a random set of quests that will dole out rewards once objectives are completed. Basically, this ups the stakes further while you’re playing.
Systems
The team is planning to release a build importer and exporter in Season 17. This will allow players to put together builds outside of a Stadium match and then select them inside a match, as well as select from community builds.
Cross-Play Function
After receiving a lot of feedback regarding Cross-Play, the team is currently investigating the possibilities of creating an unranked mode version that will allow for a Cross-Play function. Currently, since Overwatch 2 Stadium has a competitive system, it must abide by the rules of the mode, which doesn’t allow for PC and Console players to group.
If the team can figure out how to create an unranked version, this will allow groups of friends to play together and allow the team to make other changes to the mode. Until then, stay tuned on their progress in this area.
More about Overwatch 2
Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play, team-based action game (which you can access via Steam) set in the optimistic future, where every match is the ultimate 5v5 battlefield brawl. Play as a time-jumping freedom fighter, a beat-dropping battlefield DJ, or one of over 30 other unique heroes as you battle it out around the globe.
Turn up the volume as Overwatch 2 x Le Sserafim drop the beat and their bold energy straight onto the battlefield. Then, the hunt begins with Freja, the upcoming deadly DPS hero, in a limited-time trial before her full debut.
That’s not all – 6v6 Open Queue will temporarily replace 5v5 Open Queue in both ranked and unranked play, while Classic: GOATS brings back the iconic no-DPS meta that defined an era. Plus, Widowmaker’s Mythic Dame Chance Weapon Skin evolves with every pixel-perfect headshot, and we assure you… everything is totally Normalwatch!
