Netflix has released its top for the past week in movies, international movies, series, and international series. Of these top 4 categories, three were new original releases while one is a film that just keeps pulling people in.
Top Netflix English TV Series
Griselda, starring Sofía Vergara, debuted in the number one spot in the English TV List. It debuted at #1 with an impressive 20.6 million views. This makes the series the most-watched title of the week. Our critic praised the series, Vergara in particular, writing:
“Griselda is easily the best of Netflix’s NARCOS series, and that’s thanks to Vergara’s performance and her clear focus on the feminine experience in this violent world that she brought as executive producer.”
Elsewhere, the streaming service’s biggest contenders ran the gamut from drama series to the latest in reality programs. The docuseries American Nightmare was #2 on the English TV List with 13 million views. The series investigates a case that the press dubbed ‘the real-life Gone Girl.’ The crime thriller from Harlan Coben, Fool Me Once, took third place with 7.6 million views. Rounding out the top four is Love on the Spectrum US, which is celebrating its second season.
Top Netflix Non-English TV Series
The limited series The Bequeathed took the top spot on the Non-English TV list with 3.1 million views. Our critic praised the series’ ability to blend genres, writing:
“The Bequeathed blends shamanism with a supernatural edge and classic detective noir storytelling to craft something unique. The pacing is excellent at only six episodes, with each ending on a cliffhanger moment to head into the next.”
Top Netflix Film
On the film front, Lift, starring Kevin Hart, celebrated its third week atop the English Films List with 17.4 million viewers. With an impressive one, the Hart-led film brings comedy and action, but our critic found the film mixed at best, saying:
“If Lift had been in theaters, I probably wouldn’t have chosen to watch it. However, from the comfort of my home and with the lighthearted nature of the ensemble, the film is endearing enough that I found myself bobbing my head by the time the credit rolled.”
Other notable titles included Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s dystopian directorial debut The Kitchen and Adam Sandler’s Leo, which spends its tenth week on the list.
Top Netflix Non-English Film
Ma Dong-seok returns to the screen. With the latest Round-Up film announced, the action icon and actor finds himself in the top spot for the last week. The Korean action-adventure film Badland Hunters debuted at #1 on the Non-English Films List with 14.3 million views. Our reviewer said:
“Badland Hunters isn’t high art, but it is rip-roaring fun that gets bigger and louder with each subsequent act. Filled with charm and humor—and ultra-violent fight scenes— the film is a top-tier popcorn flick for anyone in love with the action genre. Or, anyone deeply enamored with Ma Dong-seok’s action career, for that matter.”
