Lady Mechanika #4

Lady Mechanika: The Monster of the Ministry of Hell #4 (Lady Mechanika #4) is published by Image Comics, written by Joe Benitez and M. M. Chen, art by Joe Benitez and Martin Montiel, colors by Beth Sotelo, and letters by Michael Heisler. Having stumbled upon Dr. Grindlethorn’s lab, Evie(Mechanika) is mortified by what she finds. What happens next are moments that help shape who she is in some profound ways. But what if everything about that moment was not as it appeared to be?

Many of us have had the soul-shaking experience of learning a pivotal moment in our history was not what we perceived it to be. Perhaps someone we thought we could trust betrayed us, or  an enemy turned out not to be the monster we thought. These revelations can be extremely destructive to those who have them, especially if large elements of their lives and many of their choices are built upon the lessons of the now fraudulent element from the past. Does this new truth instantly undermine all the things that we built upon it?

Lady Mechanika #4 poses that key question to the protagonist. She finishes her story only to have Doctor Littleton inform her that someone she once knew at the ministry is alive and practicing science still. This new information leads Mechanika to a startling revelation that shakes her world to its core.

The way Benitez’s writing delivers these revelations is excellently done. The information, as well as the reaction to it, are brought to the reader in a way that flows smoothly. It has a structure that feels like a real conversation. While the weight of the delivered knowledge comes across in Benitez’s choice of words. The party making these reveals struggles at just the right times, making it clear that there is no joy in the delivery of these truths to their receiver.

Lady Mechanika #4‘s art aids the story in delivering its emotional beats wonderfully. The shock, terror, pain, and loss that imbues the pages of this book are always front and center as the startling revelations of this story’s finale come to its protagonist. The impact on Mechanika is felt in each panel. As the titular character is seen for the last time in this issue, it feels certain that she will never be the same again. The striking colors amplify the emotion in the art. Gorgeous contrasts bring all the loss and terror into stark relief, making every moment pop off the panels. Facilitating the gorgeous art and moving story is the lettering. Every scene is allowed to flow beautifully thanks to the lettering’s stellar placement.

When all is said and done, Lady Mechanika #4 brings a shocking and impactful end to its tale. While readers will have to wait a bit for the lady’s next adventure, the immense repercussions of this issue will be living in fans’ heads till she returns to comic shops.

Lady Mechanika #4 is available now wherever comics are sold.
