REVIEW: ‘Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon,’ Episode 41 – “Akuru’s Pinwheel”

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon (Yashahime) is a fantasy/adventure anime from Sunrise. Having fallen to a strange affliction after attempting to save her father, Towa lies unmoving as Setsuna and Rin attempt to help her. Meanwhile, Inuyasha, Kagome, and Moroha are about to run headlong into Kirinmaru in Yashahime Episode 41.

The most noteworthy element of this week’s story is how much it manages to juggle successfully. It addresses the cliffhanger from the last episode, deals with a couple of new situations, and sets up the next major plot beat. And while there are a couple of elements that feel a bit unnecessary due to how they conclude, I imagine long-time Inuyasha fans have probably been looking forward to seeing some of these moments get their time on the screen. And sometimes, that’s all a scene needs to justify its existence.

While balancing all of these various elements, Yashahime Episode 41 does a great job of keeping the story’s feeling of tension present. Every beat that the story delivers has an element of tension or panic around it. This keeps the emotional tone of the episode consistent. In addition, this constant tension helps keep the viewer compelled with the episode’s events.

The final key element of this story is how it visits several characters that haven’t gotten much, if any, screen time lately. It’s nice to be brought up to speed with these characters. As the show begins to build toward its big finale, it looks like it plans to draw on a lot of the expanded cast to heighten the moment further. This would undoubtedly help this season’s story land with a larger bang than its predecessor if implemented effectively.

My only complaint about how this episode tells its story comes from a clumsy attempt to build up an emotional parting. It’s one of those moments where a character bemoans how they wish they had enough time to do a small act, but there is no time. And yet, the character has taken so much time lamenting the fact that had they just done the thing in the first place, they probably would’ve saved time. It’s a small thing, but a bit of a long-standing nerve for me with how media tries to create drama.

The visual side of Yashahime Episode 41 does a great job of delivering all of its various plot points with a minimum of confusion for the viewer. Even when the show jumps to places and people that haven’t been seen in a while, good establishing shots go a long way to letting the viewer enjoy the moments without feeling the disorientation of figuring out where they are now.

When all is said and done, Yashahime Episode 41 manages to pull a lot of different plot threads into a single, cohesive narrative. Its blend of both physical threat and plot tension keeps the episode feeling compelling from start to finish. I look forward to seeing the next step in the Half-Demon Princesses’ tale.
