DLC REVIEW: ‘Hitman 3’ Seven Deadly Sins – GREED is Shiny Despite Its Length (XSX)

Hitman 3 from IO Interactive is one of my favorite games of the year so far. With near-endless variations on contracts and plans for each map, it’s been a game that I keep coming back to and challenging myself with new planning. For its first DLC “Seven Deadly Sins — Greed,” the first part of a seven-part expansion each based on the Seven Deadly Sins, puts Agent 47 on a path focused on greed, pushing him to collect “greedy little coins” from his targets.

Now, it’s important to note that “Seven Deadly Sins — Greed” is a very lean DLC. It’s referenced as a content pack in the marketing. It features four new elements in three categories: contract, suit, and items.

The first is a new contract called The Greed Enumeration Escalation. In this contract set in the first location of the game, Dubai, Agent 47 must complete a series of objectives that unfold after you finish each target through the prescribed method of, well, elimination. After each elimination, you receive a number of “greedy little coins” that, when fed to the frog at the starting position, will help you to complete additional objectives that are only revealed once you have completed the previous ones. That said, you also have the option to leave the contract at any point, and without the ability to save, you must make the choice: exit the level now or get greedy and hunt for more coins?

The impetus for continuing on is that all of the coins that you collect in a given stage will carry over to the next stage of the Escalation, giving you the opportunity to feed the frog and earn more useful rewards at a quicker pace. This presents challenges as it evolves over time, adding different restrictions and changing targets, pushing you to learn the location if you hadn’t already. The variation in the planning of the Escalation was enough to keep me occupied for a few hours — and honestly, depending on your skills at Agent 47 the length is going to vary. My specific weakness is stealth which made the starting condition of not changing out of my starting outfit the most challenging and time-consuming of the Escalation. Additionally, working on the items from the Frog is a whole lot of fun.

In addition to the contract you also receive permanent unlocks. The first are the “Greedy Little Coin” and the two more attractiveness-focused ones are the Devil’s Cane and the Rapacious Suit. Now, let me just really candid, this is the best a suit has looked in a game and easily usurps my favorite suit of Hitman 3, the Neon City Suit, as the hottest one in Agent 47’s closet. While the suit is great to look at, using The Devil’s Cane as a melee weapon in other contracts will cause it to generate a Greedy Little Coin, to remind you of your greed.

One frustrating element about the DLC is that the golden filter placed over the level isn’t the greatest visually, and for players that already have a hard time with visuals (thanks mom and dad for the terrible eyesight) it makes things difficult. Secondly, while “Seven Deadly Sins — Greed” is just the first of seven content packs, the lack of content may make it difficult to justify a full purchase for some. However, while the content is lean, the Escalation itself is a good length overall when played through. That said, while Seven Deadly Sins — Greed itself is $4.99 USD, you can buy the entire Seven Deadly Sins collection for $29.99 which reduces your cost per DLC and honestly makes it a price that is well within reason.

Finally, with the new DLC comes a new “roadmap” for Hitman 3, which IO Interactive has renamed as a Season of Sin. It can be assumed that each season, which lasts between four and six weeks will highlight the content pack released during that time. The Season of Greed, which coincides with this DLC, also features free content.

Overall, “Seven Deadly Sins — Greed” is a lean DLC but it sure is shiny. The Greed Enumeration Escalation does a good job of building on itself, utilizes elements from the past to impact the next stage, and it offers different challenges not previously available that will push you to interact with Dubai in different ways. Plus, the suit is phenomenal.
