REVIEW: ‘Doctor Who Holiday Special’ Volume 2

Doctor Who: Holiday Special Volume 2 is published by Titan Comics, written by Jody Houser, art by Roberta Ingranata, colors by Enrica Eren Angiolini, flats by Shari Chankhamma, and letters by Richard Starkings and Sarah Hedrick. Continuing the investigation into their lost memories begun last issue, The Doctor and company continue searching for answers to who is Mr. Henderson. What is he really up to? And why does he bear such a striking resemblance to Santa Claus?

Doctor Who Holiday Special Volume 2 continues to maintain that classic Doctor Who feel to it. The surprises, tones and themes all feel genuine to its source material. However, while it serves as a well executed example of the formula present in the show, it doesn’t really land as a great story in its own right. It’s not bad by any means, but it’s not a stand out either. And while the classic television show vibe was enough to capture me for the previous volume, its hold isn’t so strong here. It still sports moments of fun however, and is certainly worth picking up to complete the fun holiday tale. Just don’t expect a blow out of an ending.

One fun stand out to the story is the introduction of Baxter, an ally who helps The Doctor and Company get out of the sticky situation they found themselves in at the end of the last issue. A fun charming character that breaths a little extra something into the story.

The one big surprise moment in Doctor Who: Holiday Special Volume 2 has to be the reveal of who the villain is. While it makes perfect sense I never would’ve expected them to utilize this character. A good solid surprise to help prop the by the numbers story.

The art of Doctor Who Holiday Special Volume 2 is well worth checking out. Ingranata continues to capture the energy of The Doctor beautifully. The almost childlike nature of The Doctor, despite her long years, is always a delight to see. These images compliment Houser’s writing of the character harmoniously.

The lighting within the story is perhaps my favorite aspect of the book. Colorist Angiolini does an excellent job that gives a lot of contrast to the panels. It helps add a bit of tension when warranted. And it’s removal for the send off helps accentuate the happiness of the ending pages.

Bearing a lovely seasonal wrap up for the Doctor and friends Doctor Who: Holiday Special Volume 2 gives a bit of that holiday warmth to its story. It often feels like Doctor Who is one of the few major franchises that still delights in leaning right into that classic Christmas season warmth. No surprise spin, or new angle of approach. Just that unfiltered sense of “lets be thankful for the year that was, and the one that is coming” joy that the holidays are supposed to be about.
