Adventure Time: Marcy & Simon #2 is published by KaBOOM, an imprint of BOOM! Studios, and written by Marceline herself, Olivia Olson. The rest of the creative team includes artist Slimm Fabert, colorist SJ Miller, and letterer Mike Fiorentino. This mini-series following Marceline and Simon, the former Ice King through the land of Ooo to atone and remember his life began last month.
In the first issue, we saw the Simon’s Ice King apology tour where her personally made apologies to every princess he had harmed, kidnapped, and did general Ice King stuff too on stage. But, as he made his way through his list, it became clear that Simon was forgetting things.
It wasn’t just omitting mistakes, no, Simon was losing all of his memories, including those of Marceline and their friendship that spans over 900 years. Always the scientist, Princess Bubblegum attempts to restore Simons memories but not before Finn and Marceline must convince the new Ice Thing, Simon’s old pal Gunther, to help with the restoration.
With only six issues to tell this story, it’s off to a great start. In issue one we learned more about the deep bond between Marceline and Simon, and now, we get to see Marceline working to save her friend. No that they’re on their journey forward and they will be faced with a difficult magical choice, I can’t wait to see where it goes.
The dialogue in this issue is yet again something that truly hits for “all ages,” just as the show did. One of the things I appreciated most was Princess Bubblegum’s science dialogue. Although it was heavy on the jargon it was perfect for her character and I can see kids using it as a starting point to the sciences. The other beauty of Princess Bubblegum in this issues is the ability to show her as a loving friend but also a completely mad scientist.
The art in the book is straight from the cartoon and the “dramatic” opening of the book is a visual gag that works extremely well. In the opening we see a collapsed Simon being rushed in a “Wee-woo-wee-woo” Jake to a doctor. We see Jake in a tiny hat, Finn in a trench coat, and Marceline in a wrap around dress and old up-do, all a noir style. Miller colors the scene in sepia tones and when the team is told to knock off the drama the panel changes from browns and beiges to the vibrant Candy Kingdom that we know.
Overall, this second issue is as good as the first. Adventure Time: Marcy & Simon #2 continues to showcase the power of friendship between its two main characters and sets up for the adventure to come as the pair head to find The Nameless One and save Simon’s memory.
Adventure Time: Marcy & Simon #2 is available wherever comic books are sold.
