ZeniMax Online Studios announced earlier this year that Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) would change its annual chapter model and move forward with something else. This “something else” was a new seasonal content model. ESO seasons will average around 90 days in length and will feature a variety of content and rewards for players, usually focused on a distinct theme. The best part of these new seasons is that season gameplay content will be available for free for anyone who owns ESO.
We had the chance to hear from the development team and learn about new content and features coming to ESO in 2026. This includes some of the new content coming in Season Zero and Season One in Elder Scrolls Online. ESO in 2026 looks to be about improving the player experience based on community feedback, discovery, and exploration in terms of what players will experience in the first three seasons of content.
Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk is set to launch on April 2, 2026, beginning this new seasonal model for ESO. There are many new things coming in Season Zero, including a new Event Zone called The Night Market, Challenge Difficulty, updates to the PVP and combat, and, continuing from Update 49, more player experience improvements.
The biggest thing coming to Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk is a new limited-time Event Zone called The Night Market. The Night Market will be available for 7 weeks, with plenty of rewards for players to earn, including a free player home. The Night Market is a group play zone focused on PvE encounters, where players will select one of the three factions to represent this season.
Players will complete quests and event challenges in this zone to earn rewards based on completing quests and challenges, and how well their faction does. Thus, the more quests and challenges you complete, the better your faction does, and the better rewards you will receive.
The ESO 2026 Seasons including Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk deliver new updates.

Challenge Difficulty is another major feature coming to Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk in ESO. This is something I have been waiting for personally for years, so I am excited to see how it works out. Challenge Difficulty is an optional overland difficulty system. Players will get to choose from one of four difficulty tiers that will determine the difficulty for overland content. Challenge Difficulty will be character-specific and will only matter for your individual character for overland content. It will not apply to group content, such as trials.
Challenge Difficulty will reward players who opt-in to greater difficulty tiers, such as more experience, coins, and general increased rewards overall for completing things. Of everything coming to ESO in 2026, this is what I am most excited about as someone who has played ESO quite a bit throughout its lifespan. The one thing that always got me was the lack of difficulty for general overland content, so finally getting a challenge system is quite exciting.
Player feedback and player experience improvements will be a focal part of Update 50, as they were in Update 49, with the goal of better streamlining older systems, reducing grind, and generally improving the overall experience, all based on player feedback. This will also include class and weapon skill line refreshes that will be coming throughout the year.
That was only Season Zero of 2026 for ESO in terms of content and gameplay. Season One will arrive sometime in Summer 2026 for players and comes with its own set of content and improvements. Season One will bring much more story-based content as the Thieves Guild returns with a brand narrative for new and returning players to dive into.
This will be a continuation from the original narrative, so for players who have already completed the Thieves Guild, the characters will all be familiar, and you will get some unique dialogue opportunities. For players who haven’t completed the original story, there is no reason to fret. We were told that you will still be able to start the new story content without completing the original and that you will have no issues understanding it.
New and exciting content is coming to Elder Scrolls Online.

A new Sheogorath questline will be available, taking players on an adventure as the Daedric Prince of Madness decides to try out life as a mortal. Both questlines will bring new rewards for players, including a new mythic weapon from The Thieves Guild.
To continue this discovery and exploration theme, ESO will introduce The Sage’s Vault, a puzzle-focused gameplay area. Whether they decide to enter solo or in a group, players will need to find their way through rooms in a non-combat-focused activity.
Two new activity types will be called “Favors” and “Rumors”. “Favors” will be a new take on daily quests based on the guilds, which will be story-based. “Rumors” will be more of a scavenger hunt-type quest. Players will use clues they find to solve the quest. There will be no UI or “hand-holding” with Rumors, and we were told to think of this like the old-school Morrowind quests, where you use clues only. Some of these “Rumors” may even have multiple endings, which will allow for more of that exploration.
These will be the majority of what is coming in the first two seasons for ESO in 2026. There will be plenty more for the rest of the year as Season Two will also be in 2026. This includes what the dev team is calling experimental content, such as two new Solo Dungeons for players to check, and a new event, the High Seas of Tamriel.
The High Seas of Tamriel will feature naval combat, pirates, and underwater exploration for players to dive into. Also, we will have some deep-sea fishing to go with it as well. For the first time in twelve years, the base game will be getting a new trial called Crimson Veldt. There wasn’t much to learn about all that is to come, as they are still months away, but they do give a good indicator that new and flavorful content is coming.
The move to the Seasonal Model will hopefully give the ESO team more creative freedom.

ESO will end the year by heading back to Skyrim to an unexplored region where ESO will introduce its first-ever Excursion Zone, including blizzards that will affect the gameplay. This will lead ESO and players into 2027. Elder Scrolls Online has plenty of exciting content and improvements arriving in 2026. While there doesn’t seem to be any new zones this year, this doesn’t mean there won’t be some coming down the road.
The team hopes that moving to this Seasonal Model will allow them more creative freedom and flexibility to experiment with content. This does mean content will not be on a rigid schedule as much anymore, but it should hopefully improve the quality of content released, as it can be released when it is properly ready.
Between this year’s content slate and what was discussed, it is clear that ESO wants to hammer home exploration and discovery in the game again. This was even mentioned in the design of future zones and the experimental content being considered in the pipeline.
The Seasons model is a part of gaming these days, was introduced in Fallout 76 a few years back, and has now arrived in ESO. It is a 12-year-old game that has drastically changed over the years, and whether this works out for the team or not, only time will tell.
Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk will launch on April 2, 2026, on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
