MagicCon Las Vegas kicks off today. With a Game Nights Live that features a Super Bowl-winning defensive tackle for the Seattle Seahawks happening later tonight, it’s safe to say that this is the biggest MagicCon has ever been, and from the con floor, it feels like it with over 25,000 people in attendance.
The MagicCon Preview Panel kicks things off by showcasing what is to come over the next year and providing more information on already announced sets like The Hobbit, Reality Fracture, and Marvel Superheroes.
The Hobbit Preview Panel Showcase

The preview panel is hosted by Jimmy Wong and opened with The Hobbit, featuring Principal Game Designer and set lead Annie Sardelis and Senior Narrative Designer and Creative Lead Nick Marcantel.
The Preview Panel featured a narrator who recited passages from The Hobbit to score the art of the upcoming set. The first card shown in the set is “An Unexpected Party,” a card that allows you to create 2/2 red Dwarf tokens, calling back to the Dwarves that play a pivotal role in Bilbo’s journey.
Bilbo’s adventure is captured from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, with Smaug becoming one of Magic’s most powerful dragons with flying, haste, and an action that captures the fact that Smaug hoards his treasures. The headliner card in the set, Smaug the Magnificent, makes as many treasures as damage dealt, making him a great addition to any and all red dragon decks out there.
Magic: The Gathering does not often do villainous headliners for its sets, but here, Smaug takes his seat at the top of the set. Known as one of the most impactful and recognizable dragons in fantasy. But it’s not just Smaug who finds his spot as a chase card. “The Arkenstone” joins “Smaug the Magnificent” with a book cover special treatment. This fantasy book cover treatment is meant to evoke nostalgia among fans and honor the novel’s history.
As Frodo in The Lord of the Rings set, Bilbo features multiple variants from common to mythic. The Hobbit’s story is taken into account from start to finish, with Bilbo’s age changing over time. The set takes players through Tolkien’s iconic novel by bringing to life nearly every character, and we got to see most of them. With Thorin the Mountain King, also getting the book cover treatment.
Unlike The Lord of the Rings set, special language cards are written in Dwarven instead of Elvish. Found in Collector’s Boosters, it’s clear that these cards will become collectors’ focus as the set drops on August 14th with prerelease happening on August 7, 2026.

Reality Fracture Preview Panel Showcase

Moving from The Hobbit and into an original set, Senior World Designer and Narrative Lead Meris Mullaley and Head Designer and Vision Director Mark Rosewater took audiences through Fracture Reality. As the set is introduced, more narration is played, giving audiences the background to the story in the new series. Jace, racked with guilt, decides to remake the world.
Mark Rosewater shared that Reality Fracture is a what-if set caused by Jace’s choice to adjust the problematic elements of each character. This takes Chandra from the rebellious spitfire to a calm ice mage, and that is just one part of Jace’s reality, called the Echoverse.
Story-wise, Reality Fracture places Jace as the primary antagonist and introduces Hexhaven, a twisted version of Strixhaven. With this, Bloodline Recollector is the set’s headliner, highlighting how the team at Wizards has played with the color pie in this new set, without throwing it out completely.

Additionally, Reality Fracture is introducing ally schools. For Hexhaven, the schools are what we know, but with a little bit of a twist in terms of color combination. The Hexhaven Schools:
- Fatehold: School of Future History (Blue White)
- Theorix: School of Esoteric Mathematics (Blue Black)
- Stingerquill: School of Painful Words (Black Red)
- Konstrari: School of Constructive Arts (Red Green)
- Vigorbloom: School of Invasive Healing

Marvel Superheroes Preview Panel Showcase

Mark Rosewater remained on stage to discuss the Marvel Superheroes set, and the panel focused on Vision. Impacted by Vision’s power set in the comic books, Magic’s version of Vision is The Vision and has flying, vigilance, and is able to use Solar Beam to gain double strike, Density Control to gain indestructible, and Technopathy to drop a card.
The Vision-focused showcase for the new Marvel set had a reason, and that was to have Vision actor Paul Bettany place “The Mind Stone” into the Infinity Gauntlet. As Rosewater explained, the Infinity Stones are the throughline across all of the Marvel sets that Wizards is releasing for Magic: The Gathering.
Cards Revealed:
- Vision of Love
- The Vision and Scarlet Witch

- The Mind Stone
