Netflix’s sports documentary list keeps growing. While a number of World Cup-focused docs are on the way, the streamer’s latest is the Rafael Nadal Documentary, titled, Rafa. The oneliner for the docuseries is intriguing for both his fans and his critics: “Behind the titles, the records, and the victories, there is a story that has never been told.”

Netflix has already hsared the release date, teaser, and first-look images for Rafa, which will premiere on May 29. The Rafael Nadal Documentary series offers never-before-seen archival footage and exclusive access to the tennis champion, his family, and his inner circle during Nadal’s final year on the ATP Tour in 2024.

Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominee Zach Heinzerling directs the series, which is produced by David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, Jason Reed, and Jon Weinbach for Skydance Sports.

Skydance Sports has produced major documentary series for Netflix, including, in just this past year: America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, WWE: Unreal, and ELWAY, as well as Emmy and PGA-nominated AKA Charlie.

What is the Rafael Nadal documentary about?

A four-episode docuseries, here is what to expect from the official Netflix synopsis:

Rafa retraces Nadal’s remarkable journey with cinematic scope, combining testimonies from those who know him best with unseen moments that reveal what lies behind the legend. From his beginnings at just three years old to his return to competition in 2024, the documentary not only shows the evolution of a champion but also the physical and emotional toll that has shaped his path, as he faces Nadal’s most constant rival time and again: his own body. Rafa spotlights a candid and vulnerable superstar, and each episode goes beyond tennis to explore the life, story, and legacy of an unparalleled icon.
