South Korean publisher and developer NEXON is adding to its MMORPG library. With Nexon already publishing Vindictus, MapleStory, and Mabinogi, it’s clear that they aren’t strangers to the MMO space. Now, the publisher is announcing a different take on their MMOs, which have traditionally been hallmarked by their anime style. Embers of the Uncrowned, the publisher’s new game, is a dark fantasy MMORPG with a focus on action from “a vivid isometric perspective.”

While the game may still be in development, NEXON shared an early look with its first cinematic trailer, which puts a clear focus on the brutal, gory visuals players can expect from the upcoming game.

What is Embers of the Uncrowned about?

Embers of the Uncrowned promo image from trailer

Official synopsis: Embers of the Uncrowned, set in a rich, immersive dark fantasy world, is based on a hero’s journey to rebuild a noble house devastated by the elves and reclaim the land that once belonged to humanity.

With an elaborately drawn universe filled with grotesque monsters and stunning environments, this new MMORPG experience draws players into a compelling tale of danger, destiny, and restoration.

Leaning all the way into dark fantasy, Ember of the Uncrowned starkly showcases the publisher’s expansion into the MMO space, bucking expectations and investing in a dark world rather than an anime-themed one, as we’ve seen from the company’s other games in the genre. With a blood-soaked trailer, NEXON is embracing a dark look more suited for Berserk than any other fantasy story.

The new trailer introduces ‘Bella’, a mysterious elf, as she is confronted by a group of knights in the ruins of a village. As she extends her hand, tendrils of liquid silver spread across the knights’ bodies right before they are torn apart, leaving blood raining from the sky, and leaving a smile on Bella’s face. Then, she absorbs their blood and coolly walks off, leaving behind a single phoenix signet ring, and making it clear that the elves of this game won’t be what you know from past experiences with the fantasy genre.

Some of the key game features NEXON highlighted in its press release include “Tactical and Intense Action” and “Settlement Progression and Player Personalization.” Which you can read more about below.

What is combat like?

Similar in aesthetic to an ARPG like Path of Exile 2, In Embers of the Uncrowned, tactical combat is the focus with pitched battles that “demand more than brute strength alone to emerge victorious.” But you won’t have to do it alone. Players will also be able to recruit companions while they master unique classes to win every battle. Some of the announced classes are Spectral Blade, Executioner, and Stormbringer.

Since players will also be able to join in for co-op battles to reclaim their lands from mighty Domain Bosses, finding out what best suits your combat style and fits the party can’t be an afterthought. While world bosses are already announced, Nexon also shared that every MMO player’s ultimate challenge, Raids, will be on the way as well.

Does this MMO have housing?

In terms of Settlement progression and personalization, as players gain notoriety and strengthen their domain within the House Harborwell, the world will expand with settlements and stories. As players travel further in conquest, they will develop their territory from a humble camp into a vibrant city as people gather and the domain of House Harborwell expands.

What is the release date?

There is currently no release date for this MMORPG; however, players can visit the game’s Steam page to wishlist the title and stay up to date. We also do not have a release window.
