The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife (Tōmei Otoko to Ningen Onna: Sonouchi Fūfu ni Naru Futari) Season 1 is perhaps the most wholesome yet entertaining romance anime this season. It offers several unique and fantastical elements, and its characters are endearing in many ways.

The Invisible Man and His Soon to be Wife Season 1 follows Yakou (Yuka Nukui) and Tounome (Yōhei Azakami). The former is a mild-mannered blind woman, while the latter is an invisible man. They both work at a private detective agency alongside another human man, KiraKira (Masaya Fukunishi), and a demihuman,  Jarashi (Riho Sugiyama). However, it’s clear throughout the season that Yakou and Tounome are growing increasingly closer and harboring romantic feelings.

Yakou and Tounome form an odd bond that grows throughout The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1.

Jarashi and Yakou in The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Episode 2

Their dynamic in The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1 is unlike that of many traditional couples in a typical romance anime. Because Tounome is an invisible man, no one can see his body, just his clothes, except when he makes them invisible. However, because Yakou is blind, her other senses are heightened, and she can always tell where Tounome is.

This makes him more interested in her, and they form an odd bond. The anime plays with this dynamic and portrays the characters’ budding feelings for each other quite well. Each episode deepens their bond as they learn about each other, and their quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. Yakou’s blindness is explored in incredibly detailed, realistic ways, highlighting the struggles and realities of being blind, something many people face. This includes showing how blind people use technology, distinguish people from each other by voice and scent, and even how they use walking sticks and intricately designed pathways.

The anime’s cast is its highlight, as each character is endearing, and their differences add a fresh element.

Karma and Light in The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be wife Season 1

On the other hand, The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1 also explores its fantastical setting by delving into themes and concerns specific to each fantasy species and race in the series. This includes Tounome and his race’s struggles with being hard to trust by other species due to their powers, which results in discrimination.

The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1 also takes time to cover other characters and their races, like Jarashi’s struggle to find outfits because of her spotted fur or Karma’s powers as a dark elf, which could potentially curse his pregnant wife. However, the episode that stands above the others is the penultimate one, which tells the story of Tounome’s friend Masashi, who struggles with the same issues he does but still finds a way to succeed despite them.

The anime’s cast is its highlight, as each character is endearing, and their differences add a fresh element. This is especially true for Yakou, who is the most expressive, animated, and bubbly character, who makes every situation better with her positive attitude. She wears her emotions on her sleeves, and her expressions, reactions, and comments are especially cute.

The animation and art direction by Project No.9 shine in The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1.

Tounome and Yaku in The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Episode 3

The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1 excellently highlights each character, especially the gradual yet serious development of the relationship between the two leads, in an entertaining yet realistic way that’s common among most adults. Though it is worth noting that some characters, including those not from the main cast, are explored more than others, which is a bit disappointing.

Another highlight is the production quality, specifically its animation and art direction by studio Project No.9 (Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective). Several episodes, especially episodes 7 and 11, showcase impeccably detailed motions, expressions, and action scenes. This makes The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1 stand out significantly among other romance anime.

Overall, The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1 is an excellent romance anime that superbly highlights the lead couple while offering a narrative beyond their romance. Its unique world, interesting cast, and surprisingly impressive production quality make it one of the best anime of the season and among the pinnacle of its genre.

The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife Season 1 is streaming now on Crunchyroll.
