We’re at the start of a new year, and that means it is time for a new Fallout 76 season and updates. Fallout 76 is set to launch its first major update of 2026, titled “The Backwoods,” to kick off season 24 of the almost seven-year-old game. But with 23 seasons under their belt, what’s new? Well, the answer is quite a bit.
We checked out some of the new features and changes coming to Update 66. The Backwoods will bring the usual new weapons, mods, armor, and, of course, balance all new and existing items, as expected with each update. That said, Camp Titles and performance improvements to the Pipboy will also be in this update for players to experience and play around with.
While the majority of the updates aren’t too complex, there is one main component of Fallout 76 that will be overhauled in The Backwoods, which also includes a brand new feature: Public Events. Public events will be getting a complete overhaul, along with the new Party Crasher System.
The biggest update in “The Backwoods” is an overhauled Event System.

The first part of the public events overhaul is that events will now be better categorized into two distinct types and will get their own individual icons on the map for tracking. These two distinct types will be familiar to players, but they are being added for better player organization, known as Public and Activity events.
Activity events are designed for 1-3 players and happen every 10 minutes, while Public events are designed for more players and offer even more rewards. There will be between 40 and 50 events that were overhauled, including both Activities and Public events. The amount of change per event varies, with sometimes a major change being implemented and sometimes just small refinements.
To better understand the event system overhaul, we watched The Moonshine Jamboree and Most Wanted events on the Public Test Server (PTS) while one of the Zenimax developers played. At the Moonshine Jamboree, there were additional enemy spawns in different locations to make the event a little more challenging and eliminate some of the more popular hiding places. The Most Wanted, even the number of Buckaroos needed to complete, was refined from 600 to 500.
Some events have been overhauled entirely, while others will see small refinements in Update 66.

There were a few other major changes to events in that now completing an event gives experience based on your character’s level, and there is no standard amount anymore. Enemies will now scale better based on the number of players and their levels, with enemies now spawning up to level 125. The last and biggest change, which is also a brand new feature introduced by the Party Crash System.
The Party Crasher system will be introduced in Update 66: The Backwoods for Fallout 76 as a way to add more challenges for players, but mainly to make doing events worth your time. These changes to events were designed to give players more incentives and rewards to complete them, but they also wanted to ensure that doing events in general, no matter the type, would be worth players’ time.
The Party Crasher is now at the end of events. There is a chance for a final “Uninvited Guest” to appear for players to kill and get high-end loot. Each event will have its own unique “Uninvited Guest” for that specific event. However, there is also a brand new cryptid being introduced in The Backwoods to go along with the new Party Crasher system.
Fallout 76 Update 66 aims to add more player investment in events.

This new cryptid is Bigfoot, and he will be the only “Uninvited Guest” that is not locked into a single event and can spawn at any event. Bigfoot will be a four-star cryptid, meaning this will be the first time there will be a four-star enemy for players to kill outside of the raid.
Bigfoot will be different than the other Uninvited Guests, as there will be a time limit that players have to kill him, which should be around five minutes. Bigfoot will be the new big challenge for this update, which also means he comes with plenty of rewards. If players successfully defeat Bigfoot, they will be guaranteed a four-star item to be dropped, including the unique four-star “Thrill Seeker Mod”.
Some other potential Uninvited Guests include Mirelurk Queen, Deathclaw Matriarch, and the Storm Goliath, which we were also able to see during our time. These Party Crashers should add new challenges, bring new rewards, and add a whole new layer to Fallout 76 events. There will not be a party crasher at every single event, as they are random, so the more events players check out, the better the odds of encountering one of these creatures.
Fallout 76’s new Party Crasher mechanic allows for more unique encounters for players to work through.

Fallout 76 Update 66: The Backwoods will be defined for the most part by the new Party Crasher System and cryptid Bigfoot; however, there will be plenty of other things for players to experience. This is just the start of 2026 and season 24.
We were told that, while not included in this update, fishing changes are coming, including new fish in the future. New Raid and ghoul content, along with other such things, are also in the pipeline, so players will just have to wait and see on those fronts.
Fallout 76 Update 66: The Backwoods launches on March 3, 2026.
